The State Baseball Championships got underway at Principal Park in Des Moines over the weekend. Winners in the class 1A first round action was Mason City Newman, Remsen St. Mary’ – ‘s, Preston and Martensdale St. Mary’ – ‘s.

Class 2A action begins today: Waterloo Columbus vs Ft. Dodge St. Edmond, Solon vs Interstate 35 Truro, Carroll Kuemper vs Cherokee, Davis County vs PCM Monroe.

3A play will be held Tuesday and then 4A Wednesday. Semi Final play begins Thursday.

The North-South All Star Shrine football game was played Saturday night in Ames. The underdog North rolled over the highly favored South 24-0.

Iowa Wesleyan College’ – ‘s Troy Osborne (Sydney, Australia), a member of the Tigers men’ – ‘s soccer team, has been named to the National Premier Soccer League All-Star team. Osborne is playing for the Eau Claire (Wis.) Aris and was named a Midwest Regional All-Star. He also was later selected to the NPSL national all-star team and will take part in the NPSL All-Star match to be held Friday, July 30 at 8pm in Madison, Ala. Osborne is a goalkeeper and will be a junior this year on the IWC men’ – ‘s soccer team. In his first two years he has played in 33 matches, including starting all 19 matches last year as a sophomore. In his two seasons he has posted a 2.36 goals against average with three shutouts.

Kansas City Royals lost to the Yankees in New York 12-6 yesterday to wrap up the weekend series. K.C. goes home to play the Twins tonight on KILJ-AM 1130 at 6:35pm
