MPHS baseball team dropped their game at Ft. Madison last night 9-8, and were leading the second game 7-2 in the top of the third inning when it was suspended for weather. In the opener the Bloodhounds scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning aided by a passed ball and throwing error to snatch just their sixth win of the season. Henry Krieger-Coble was 2-4 with a double and triple, Tanner Courtney and Ross Heitmeier 2-4, Cody Vaughn was 3-5. Tonight the Panthers and Bloodhounds play a double header in Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers will wait to see how Fairfield and Washington come out tonight when they play 2 1/2 games against each other to see if the completion of last nights suspended game is necessary.

Regional Softball begins in all four classes of girl’ – ‘s softball in Iowa this week. Last night 1A regional play got going, a game you heard on KILJ had New London (13-22) defeating Holy Trinity Catholic (6-19) 4-1, Bria Mears was the winning pitcher, Charley Lorger had two doubles and 3 RBI’ – ‘s. New London will now advance on to play in the quarter finals Friday night in West Point against the winner of the Harmony at Danville game that will be completed tonight after being suspended in the fourth inning last night with the Rockets leading the Bears 1-0. The WMU at Lone Tree game from last night was postponed till tonight, the winner of that game will play Waco Friday night in Kalona as the Warriors beat IMS 6-5 last night. That game was moved from Wayland to Kalona to a drier field.

2A regional play begins tonight with Central Lee @ Mediapolis (live on KILJ-FM 105.5 and @ 7pm), Van Buren @ W. Burlington/Notre Dame, Columbus @ Mid Prairie, Wapello @ L-M. Quarter finals will be played the next night, semis on July 12th and finals on July 14th.

In 3A action Mt. Pleasant will play Ft. Madison at Ft. Madison in the first round of the regional softball tournament at 7:00pm on July 10th. The second round game of the regional will be played on July 12th in Mt. Pleasant Community High School at Maple Leaf at 7:00pm The winner of the MPHS/Ft. Madison game will play the winner of the Williamsburg/Washington match up. The regional final is July 14th in Keokuk, Pella, Centerville, Fairfield and Keokuk make up the bottom bracket of the regional.

Viterbo University’ – ‘s Barry Fried has been selected by his peers as the 2009-10 Midwest Collegiate Conference Athletic Director of the Year. Under the direction of Fried, V-Hawk teams experienced plenty of success on and off the court during the 2009-2010 school year. Viterbo saw its athletics department grow to 13 sports by adding varsity men’ – ‘s and women’ – ‘s bowling teams, the third straight year the school has increased its number of sport offerings. The 2009-10 school year also included a record recruiting class for the athletic department with 131 new student-athletes. The V-Hawks also had a successful season in the classroom, finishing with a cumulative team GPA of 3.16. Fried also continued to emphasize Viterbo’ – ‘s participation in the NAIA Champions of Character initiative as Viterbo was once again honored as a NAIA Champions of Character institution. V-Hawk teams sponsored 37 community service projects and hosted 3,349 youth in different camps, leagues and tournaments. V-Hawk Athletics also raised over $250,000 through sponsorships, booster clubs, golf outings, and youth camps/leagues. These fundraising efforts helped with numerous facility improvements during the past year including new scoreboards in the R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium, expanded workout facilities in the Varsity Athletic Center, and improvements in the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex including semi-permanent soccer goals, branded windscreens, and field improvements.

Kansas City Royals finished up on the west coast, they played Seattle last night and won 7-3. Royals come back to the Midwest to play a weekend series in Chicago against the White Sox before the all star break.
