High school football, volleyball and cross country practice begins today across the state of Iowa. Today the outdoor sports teams will have to contend with the rain and heat. Hopefully the gyms are air conditioned for the volleyball teams.

IF YOU PLAN TO HUNT AND WERE BORN AFTER JANAURY 1ST 1972, THEN YOU NEED TO HAVE COMPLETED A HUNTER EDUCATION SAFETY CLASS. IN ORDER TO PURCHASE AN IOWA HUNTING LICENSE YOU MUST HAVE A CERTIFICATE SHOWING YOU HAVE COMPLETED A HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE. CLASSES WILL BE HELD HERE IN HENRY COUNTY COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER. THE CLASSES WILL BE HELD AT THE IOWA STATE PATROL POST 13 BUILDING IN MT. PLEASANT ON SOUTH GRAND AVENUE. TERRY NIMS, DNR OFFICER FROM MUSCATINE COUNTY AND JIM ONORATO OF THE HENRY CONTY CONSERVATION BOARD WILL BE THE INSTRUCTORS. CLASS WILL BE HELD SEPTEMBER 8TH AND 9TH FROM 6 TO 9 P.M. AND SEPTEMBER 11TH FROM 8 A.M. TILL 3 P.M. INTERESTED PERSONS SHOULD SIGN UP BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1ST AT THE HENRY COUNTY CONSERVATION OFFICE AT OAKLAND MILLS, GUNS LTD. IN MT. PLEASANT OR AT THE HENRY COUNTY RECORDERS OFFICE AT THE COURT HOUSE. THE MINIMUM AGE FOR CERTIFICATION IS 12 YEARS OLD.

The Wayland State Bank is sponsoring a bus trip to watch the St. Louis Cardinals play the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium on August 15th. Cost of the trip including game ticket is $95. Stop in at the Wayland State Bank offices in Mt. Pleasant or Wayland and sign up.

Season tickets for Iowa State’s 2010-11 wrestling schedule are now on sale and include eight home contests. NCAA powerhouses Minnesota (Jan. 16), Oklahoma (Jan. 21) and Oklahoma State (Jan. 23) are among the teams set to compete in Hilton Coliseum. The $80 season ticket also includes a pair of unique events in Hilton Coliseum this season. The popular Beauty and the Beast event on Jan. 21 will feature the Iowa State wrestlers against Oklahoma while the Cyclone gymnastics team competes against Missouri. The Cyclones season climaxes with the hosting of the Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championships on March 5 in Hilton Coliseum. Season-ticket holders will retain their seat location for both of these events. Iowa State’s wrestling team opens the season at Virginia Tech. The Cyclones will wrestle at Iowa, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Iowa State will again wrestle in the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. (Dec. 29-30) and the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa (Jan. 8-9). The Cyclones return to New York to wrestle Cornell and Binghamton on Jan. 30. Kevin Jackson’s grapplers will close out the dual slate at Missouri (Feb. 13) and at Nebraska (Feb. 20.) After playing host to the Big 12 Championships, the Cyclones will travel to compete in the NCAA Championships March 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Kansas City Royals lost to the Mariners 3-2, tonight the Royals have a game at the Los Angeles Angels and it can be heard on KILJ-AM 1130 beginning at 8:30 p.m. Baltimore beat the White Sox 4-3, Reds beat the Cubs 11-4 and the Cardinals were rained out in Florida.
