Jillian Leutscher (Fr.-Belvidere, Ill.) slapped a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Iowa Wesleyan College softball team a 6-5 win and a sweep of a doubleheader against Viterbo (Wis.) University Wednesday night at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

The Tigers also defeated the V-Hawks 2-0 in the first game of the doubleheader as Ayla Serrano (So.-Rock Island, Ill.) threw a shutout. The two wins gave Wesleyan a surprising sweep of two games from a Viterbo team that came into the game second in the Midwest Collegiate Conference but fell to 9-7 in conference (15-13 overall).

Local sports happenings today: MPHS boys golf at Fairfield, MPHS girls tennis hosts Fairfield, M.P. boys tennis at Fairfield, Panthers boys track at Eddyville Blakesburg, WMU relays will be run at Maple Leaf Track MPHS JV girls and boys teams competing, MPHS girls golf at Washington Invitational, M.P. girls track at Washington Relays.

The IHSAA has announced the Spring Golf Tournament sites and assignments. The MPHS boy’s golf team will play their Sectional Tournament at Oskaloosa on the Edmundson Golf Course Thursday May 12th. The Panthers will battle with Centerville, Chariton, Fairfield, Ft. Madison, Keokuk, Washington and Oskaloosa. The District qualifiers will advance to play May 20th at the Stone Creek Course hosted by Williamsburg. The State Meet will be held at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
One of the Class 2A sectionals will be held May 13th at the Kalona Golf Course. Teams competing will be Albia, Davis County, Eddyville-Blakesburg, Regina, Van Buren, West Branch, West Liberty and Mid Prairie the host school. Another 2A sectional will be played at Flint Hills in Burlington. Teams competing will be: Central Lee, Columbus Community, Durant, L&M, Mediapolis, Wapello, Wilton and the host school Burlington Notre Dame. The District qualifiers from both Sectionals play at the Geneva Golf course May 20th hosted by Wapello. The State Meet will be held at the Spring Valley Course at Livermore.
Class 1A Sectional will be played at the Deerwood Golf Club New London. Teams competing: Danville, Holy Trinity Catholic, IMS, Keota, Lone Tree, Maharishi, Waco, WMU and New London. The District qualifiers will play at Iowa City’s Pleasant Valley Golf Course on Thursday May 19th at 9:30 a.m. The State Meet will be held at Lake Panorama National Golf Course near Panora.

The 2011 Iowa Wesleyan College fundamentals camp will be held June 13th thru the 17th at Howe Activity Center. It’s for boys in grades 5-8. Campers will learn offensive and defensive fundamentals and also play in a number of games as well as contests. The camp is headed up by IWC men’s basketball coach Al Magnani, registration is underway now, if interested call 385-6307 or 986-5482.

Mother Nature forced the cancellation of racing
action at 34 Raceway last weekend but the action will come back
Saturday, April 23 with the excitement and anticipation of the Midwest
Open Wheel 410 Outlaw Sprints. Feel the power as the 410 winged
warriors, Brian Brown, Terry McCarl, Joey Moughan, Donnie Beechler and
more take on the 3/8 high bank of 34 Raceway in their first of two
appearances in 2011.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts, Monster Energy Drink, Pepsi sponsored MOWA
410 Outlaw Sprint Shootout will kick off with a Drivers Meet-n-Greet
at the Burlington O’Reilly’s Auto Part Store from 11:00 am to 1:00
p.m. with a free lunch and Pepsi products. Then head on out to 34
Raceway for some great 410 sprint racing excitement.
The J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models will be providing
their own ground shaking action along with the Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA
Stock Cars in their first track points races of the year.
Pit gates open 4:00, Grandstands 5:00. Time trials start at 7 p.m.
Pit Pass $25, Grandstand Admission $18 Adults, $15 Seniors &
