The new director of the Iowa Department of Public Health was in Mt.Pleasant Thursday.

Dr. Marianette Miller-Meeks attended the Henry County Public Health Board meeting and afterwards spent some time with the public health department. During the board meeting, Mille Meeks talked about increasing the visibility of local Public Health Departments, saying they have become invisible because do such a good job. But besides giving immunizations, tracking communicable diseases and checking water quality, the department is involved with obesity issues, drug and alcohol abuse, aging issues just to mention a few areas. The budget has been Dr. Miller Meeks priority as she works to keep funding available for necessary services and evaluates those services that may no longer be effective.
