MPHS softball team played Ottumwa in their season opener Friday night. The 6th ranked Bulldogs took a doubleheader sweep over Mount Pleasant —winning 16-0 and 14-1.
The Panthers will try to bounce back Tuesday night as they travel to Keokuk to play the Chiefs at 5:30.
Other area softball last night saw WMU/WACO split a doubleheader with Pekin falling in game one 11-7, and winning game two 17-4.
And Washington took two from Ft Madison 7-2, 7-3.
Mt Pleasant’s State Tennis contenders Eric Hahn and Jerad Ruble were eliminated yesterday in the first round of the Boys Class 1A State Meet in Waterloo. The senior duo fell to the top-seeded, and defending champion duo of Michael Doerdt, and Alex Bernt of Waterloo Columbus – – then lost in the consolation first round. Holy Trinity Catholic boy’s soccer team defeated Danville-New London 6-1 in a class 1A substate semi final Friday.
Columbus Community downed Burlington Notre Dame/W. Burlington 2-0.
Columbus and HTC will now play today at noon in West Point to determine who advances to state.
Area girl’s soccer: Holy Trinity Catholic defeated the Keokuk girls soccer team 2-0 and will now advance onto to play Mt. Pleasant Tuesday in the Regional semi finals at Mt. Pleasant.
The Panther Wrestling Club is going to host a 5K run on June 18th and all area runners are invited to participate. The run will be held at East Lake Park with registration at 8 a.m. and race begins at 9 a.m. There will be male and female races for pre-high school, high school, post high school to age 34 and age 35 and over. Mustang Fastback Monster Truck Ghost Ryder to the Lee County Speedway on Saturday, May 28th for the 1st of 2 Eve of Destruction events held at the County Fairgrounds. Quick will be performing tricks including his acclaimed Backflip. Also on the card for the Saturday event will be Bus Races, a Roll Over Competition, Trailer Races, and a Figure 8 Demolition Derby. The Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center has announced they will open the pool Monday May 30th, then close during the school week, reopen on June 4th and 5th, then open for the season on June 8th at 1 p.m. Individual pool passes this year are priced at $50, family of five passes are $120 ($5 for each additional family member). Ticket books of ten are $30 and 25 will be $60.
Contact the Rec Department to sign up for swimming lessons and a life guard training class will be held June 9th – 11th for anyone age 15 and over.
The Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec Department has announced several summer sports camps that area youth can register for and attend. Middle School volleyball camp, youth golf for ages 8-14, youth tennis for ages 8-14 and youth soccer for 1st thru 6th grade kids will all be held this summer. The 2011 Mt. Pleasant Panther basketball Camp is going to be held from June 20th thru 23rd. It’s for boys in grades 3-8th and will be held at MPHS from 8:30-11 a.m. Cost is $40 per camper, each additional family member is $25 and a $5 discount for registrations received before June 6th.
