Burlington hires new girls basketball coach.

Burlington High School has hired a new girls basketball coach. Kevin Mills who has been coaching at Lawton Bronson High School located in Woodbury County in western Iowa will replace Mark Miller who stepped down after this past season. In his 11 seasons at Lawton Bronson he has compiled a 149-84 won-loss record and lead them to the state tournament three times.

Boy’s class 1A Sectional golf saw New London, Holy Trinity Catholic and WMU finish 1-2-3 in on the Deerwood course in New London. Tigers shot 325, Crusaders 355 and Wolves 360. They now play in the district at Pleasant Valley Thursday. The State Meet will be held at Lake Panorama National Golf Course near Panora.
2A golf sectional was won by Central Lee at the Flint Hills course in Burlington. Hawks shot 316 and now advance onto the district at Geneva Country Club in Muscatine Friday.
The State Meet will be held at the Spring Valley Course at Livermore.

State track qualifiers from the KILJ listening area we will follow at the state meet Thursday thru Saturday: GIRLS: MPHS-Taylor Shull 200 , Chloe Haffarnan 800, Hannah Weber 1500 and 3000, Leslie Taylor 100 meter hurdles and long jump, Kaitlin Jones 400 hurdles, shuttle hurdle relay, 4×100, 4×800, distance medley.
Columbus Community: Heaven Chandler 100, 200, 100 meter hurdles and long jump. Megan Pretz hurdles, shuttle hurdle, 4×800.
Central lee: Katie Hocker 1500 and 3000.
Mediapolis: Sarah Staley 400 hurdles, 4×100, 4×400, sprint medley, Tayo Ajose high jump, distance medley.
New London: Aaren Wright 400, Breanne Dean 400 hurdles, shuttle hurdle relay, 4×400, sprint medley
Danville Cassie Stuflick 1500, 3000, Taylor Bowling hurdles and high jump , distance medley
WMU: shuttle hurdle
WACO: 4×800, Rosemary Skriver high jump.
BOYS: MPHS-Darian Cotton 100, Scott Hahn 400, Donnie Johnson 800, Justis Wellington 1600, Brandon Moorman hurdles, 4×100, 4×400, 4×800, distance medley, shuttle hurdle, Leonard Wester discus and shot put, Brayton Meeker shot put.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national softball championships opens with pool play Thursday in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The Iowa Wesleyan Tiger softball team was placed in pool “C” with William Carey of Mississippi, Olivet Nazarene of Illinois and William Woods of Missouri. IWC opens play May 19th at 3 p.m. against #3 ranked William Carey.

The MPHS girl’s tennis team will be involved in the class 1A singles and doubles at the University of Iowa tennis center Thursday May 19th beginning at 9 a.m.

MPHS boy’s tennis team plays Grinnell in substate team tennis action at Fairfield Saturday.

The 2A Regional golf tournament is at West Liberty Monday, Wapello will be competing.
The 1A girls golf regional Monday has Michaela Kremer of Waco competing in medalist play and New London in the team competition. The Regional is at Belle Plaine.

The Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball program will be hosting a volleyball camp in August for girls entering grades 5-12.
Registrations are now being accepted for separate camps for girls entering grades 5-8 and grades 9-12, both to take place June 20-24 on campus at Ruble Arena in the Howe Student Activity Center. A camp for grades 9-12 will take place from 8-11:30 a.m., with a camp for grades 5-8 from 1-3:30 p.m. The camps will be led by IWC Head Volleyball Coach Jill Blake.
The cost of the camp is $75. All campers will receive a free T-shirt, and prizes will be awarded throughout the camp. Registrations are due by June 13, checks can be made payable to IWC Volleyball Camp and can be sent to:

The Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec Department has announced several summer sports camps that area youth can register for and attend. Middle School volleyball camp, youth golf for ages 8-14, youth tennis for ages 8-14 and youth soccer for 1st thru 6th grade kids will all be held this summer. Stop by the rec department and sign up or go on line to for more info. The camps will teach the basics of each sport and team concepts.

The 2011 Mt. Pleasant Panther basketball Camp is going to be held from June 20th thru 23rd. It’s for boys in grades 3-8th and will be held at MPHS from 8:30-11 a.m. Cost is $40 per camper, each additional family member is $25 and a $5 discount for registrations received before June 6th. The Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center has announced they will open the pool Monday May 30th, then close during the school week, reopen on June 4th and 5th, then open for the season on June 8th at 1 p.m. Individual pool passes this year are priced at $50, family of five passes are $120 ($5 for each additional family member). Ticket books of ten are $30 and 25 will be $60.
