Dorothy S. Caris

Dorothy S. Caris, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at her residence.
A funeral service for Dorothy Caris will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 30th at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend David Bracht-Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29th at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street\, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM on Wednesday.
Mrs. Caris, the former Dorothy Lee Shaw, was born on January 4, 1926 in Wapello, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harvey George and Maude Myrtle (Ruby) Shaw. On November 23, 1947 at her parent’s home in Morning Sun, Dorothy was united in marriage to Steward Caris. Mr. Caris died in 1978.
At 6 years of age, Dorothy moved with her family from Wapello to Morning Sun. She graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1944. Dorothy was conferred with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1949. She taught 1 year of Home Economics at Yarmouth High School. She then attended the University of Iowa and received a degree in Special Education, with an endorsement in Elementary Education.
From 1966 until her retirement in 1991, Mrs. Caris taught Special Education at the Mt. Pleasant Junior High School. She implemented very creative and innovative teaching methods to assist Special Education Student in receiving standard classroom instruction as well as skills they would need as they sought employment in the workforce. Dorothy developed a store in the school where her students learned to run a retail business while selling school supplies to the students.
Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant and the United Methodist Women. Since 1949, Dorothy was a member of T.T.T. Founders Chapter A of Mt. Pleasant, and was related to the originating founders of the T.T.T. organization. Her professional educators’ memberships included the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and the Retired School Personnel of Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority since her days at Iowa Wesleyan. Dorothy was a very adept card player, most especially in bridge. Since the 1950’s, she was a member of a longstanding bridge group in Mt. Pleasant.
Those thankful for sharing in Dorothy’s life include her 3 children – Robert Caris and his wife Roberta of Iowa City, David Caris of San Antonio, TX and Jean Ann Caris of Boulder, CO; six grandchildren – Emily Ambrose, Caitlin and Lauren Caris, Madeline, Jack and Paige Osland and 1 great grandson, Wyatt Ambrose.
In addition to her parents and husband, 1 brother, Harold Shaw and 1 sister, Mary Jean Mathews precede Dorothy in death.

Hazel May VanWinkle 86 of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the Henry County Health Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Don Sammons, 68, of Salem, IA, died June 25, 2011, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant, IA.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 28th, beginning after 12 noon, at the Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, June 29th, at the Salem East Cemetery, Salem, IA. A memorial has been established and may be directed to the family.
