Magicians, stilt walkers, wiener dog races, pie contest, hypnotist, area bands, bike races, kids’ games, a block full of vendors, softball and horse shoe contests, and the largest small town parade in Iowa are what make up Town & Country Days 2011.
There’s something for kids both young and old, at Town & Country Days in Mediapolis this year. Themed The Magic Of Mepo, Mediapolis residents have all come together to show visitors what is so magical about our town! “We have something for everyone,” said T&C Days president Danny Davis. “This year we’ve included new things such as the wiener dog races, a whole block full of vendors, horseshoe tournament and several other events that will make this a great weekend.”
Traditionally celebrated the last weekend of August, T&C Days has increased its size just in the past few years. Parade organizer Mary Steffener has seen this herself. “Last year we had close to 150 parade entries, and I think this year we’ll see that grow.” There will also be cash prizes given out in 10 places this year. It’s something T&C Days board member Misty Robinson says is welcomed. “I think it will help bring out the creativity in people to go all out with our theme.”
The event kicks off Friday night with a 5 p.m. meal and entertainment from Eileen Dunnegan, Patrick Noon, the Bill Riley Talent Contest, and the 61 Chophouse Karaoke Winners.
Saturday morning begins with the Mediapolis Business Club’s 5k run/walk at 7 a.m. with the Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast from 6-9 a.m.
Vendors from all types will line the west side of Cartwright Park selling everything from candles, to jewelry, to perfume and more. The Vender Blender event is something to see. Throughout the day and all around the park will be kids’ games, a clown, a dunk tank, Jump For Fun inflatables, pedal tractor pull, wiener dog races, and a stilt walker.
On the main stage throughout the afternoon is music by Chris Tapp, the Mediapolis Community Youth Group, The Huletts, the Larsonaires, and the Methodist Church Band.
Also on the main stage is the T&C Days Pie Contest. Prizes are being awarded in a host of categories for the best pies around. After the judging a pie auction will take place onstage with all proceeds going towards future T&C Days events. For more information on entering the Pie Contest call 394-9303.
Comedy Hypnotist Dan Ladd will be this year’s opener at 6 p.m.. The show is a clean, safe, fast-paced laugh riot, and the only type of entertainment where the audience is the star.
Headlining this year’s T&C Days event is the Balster Magic Show. Based out of Chicago the husband and wife team perform a combination of magic, game shows, illusions, and comedy that includes animals, audience participation, and special effects. “They came highly recommended from festivals that had booked them in the past,” said board president Danny Davis. “Both Tim and Robin are great people who bring a family style show that we felt fits into what T&C Days is all about.”
In addition to dozens of tropical ports and the countries of Korea, Japan, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas, the Balsters have performed in 41 states including Alaska and Hawaii and are currently on a 2011 tour. The Balster Magic Show begins Saturday shortly after 7 p.m. on the main stage at Cartwright Park.
T&C Days is scheduled for the weekend of August 26 in Mediapolis. For more information call Danny Davis at 319-394-3174.
