Bert A. Butcher, 80, of Burlington, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at his home.
Born November 5, 1930, in Bloomington, IN, he was the son of Bert Arthur and Hazel Wilma Kirkpatrick Butcher. On June 14, 1959, he married Karen Louise Moore in Thornburg, IA.
Bert was a distributor for The Des Moines Register for 30 years. He retired in 1992.
He was a 1948 graduate of Olds High School. He served in the National Guard.
He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Moose Lodge, and a former member of Burlington Evening Lions. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed horses, dogs, antiques, gardening, yard work, trips to Arizona and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; one son, Jim (Frances) Butcher of West Lafayette, IN; one daughter, Terri Butcher-Lee of Burlington; two grandsons, David Butcher, and Austin Lee; three brothers, Bill Butcher of Mt. Pleasant, Mike Butcher of Salem, and Steve Butcher of Rogers, AR; five sisters, Charlotte King of Mount Pleasant, Betty Maddox of Mount Pleasant, Jean Bartmann of Washington, IA, Patti Weller of Iowa City,and Pam Schinstock of Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Virginia Machholz.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Butcher will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Pastor D. Dean Benton officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the service.
As per Bert’s request cremation will be accorded following the service. A private family graveside committal service and inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
