Rita Ann Mehmert, 86 years, of St. Paul, Iowa died surrounded by her family at 10:41 pm Friday, August 26, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. She was born July 26, 1925 at her home in rural West Point, Iowa, a daughter of Otto and Anna (Vantiger) Meierotto. On July 26, 1948, she married Joseph James Mehmert at St. James the Less Catholic Church, St. Paul, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2003. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of St. James the Less Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and was a God’s Acre Sale supporter. She was known for her sense of humor, enjoyed a good game of euchre with family and friends, was an avid seamstress, and enjoyed traveling in her younger years. Rita was a liver transplant survivor of 12 ½ years. She loved life and was determined to live.
She is survived by two sons, Eugene (wife Sandy) Mehmert, of West Point, Iowa and Kenny (wife Karen) Mehmert, of St. Paul, Iowa; four daughters: JoAnn (husband Jim) Boeding, of West Point, Iowa; Glorine (husband Jim) Scharpman, of West Point, Iowa; Linda (husband Mike) Moeller, of Salem, Iowa; and Paulette Kruse of St. Paul, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Sister Bernadelle Mehmert, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one granddaughter, Kelsey, two brothers, Andrew and Linus Meierotto, and four sisters: Sister Annelda, Sister Althea, and Sister Ottona Meierotto, and Mary Agnes Dingman.
Friends may call after 2:30 pm Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, West Point, Iowa where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm. Her family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:00 pm during the visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the St. James the Less Catholic Church, St. Paul, Iowa with Reverend Gary Beckman as Celebrant. Burial will be at the St. James Cemetery, St. Paul, Iowa. A memorial has been established for the St. James the Less Catholic Church or St. James Cemetery, contributions may be made at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home or at the church.
