The Mt. Pleasant Panthers varsity volleyball team Saturday traveled to Osceola to play for the first time this 2011 season. They won 2 and lost 2 matches on the day. The first match the Panther’s faced Martinsdale St. Mary’s M.P. won 21-15 and 21-16. Match 2 was against Bedford and Mt. Pleasant lost by the score 19-21 and 16-21. Panthers played their 3rd match against Lamoni after a slow start and losing the first game 17-21 Mt. Pleasant won the next two games 21-16, 15-6.
They finished pool play in 2nd place, then went to play the number one team from pool A and fell to a strong East Union team by scores of 17-25, 16-25.

Here are the standings for the Danville Volleyball Tournament held Saturday August 27.
Team records: Mediapolis won the championship going 6-0 beating Danville 2-0 in the championship, the Bears ended up 5-1, New London: 3-2, Keota: 2-2, Cardinal: 1-3, L & M: 0-4, Maharishi: 0-4.

Iowa Wesleyan College was limited to 223 yards of total offense and William Penn University broke open a close game in the final quarter for a 42-7 win over the Tigers in both teams’ season openers Saturday night at Penn’s new Lacey Complex Stadium.
The eighth-ranked Statesmen gained 396 yards rushing, picking up where they left off last year when they led the NAIA in rushing offense.
IWC played the Statesmen tough for nearly three quarters and, after falling behind 21-0 midway through the second quarter, quarterback Kevin McConnell (Jr.-Kansas City, Mo.) hit Ridge Hobbs (So.-New London, Iowa) deep over the middle for a 69-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7.
Sale Fatu (Jr.-Pago Pago, American Samoa) and Aaron Wagoner (Jr.-Roseville, Calif.) both led Wesleyan with seven tackles each. Jesse Carbajal (Jr.-San Jose, Calif.) added five tackles. IWC will play its second straight road game to start the season when it travels to face Quincy (Ill.) University next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Flinn Stadium.

Donnie Johnson rushed for 112 yards and 3 touchdowns, then on defense returned an interception for a score to lead Mt. Pleasant to a 28-16 road win over Clear Creek Amana. M.P. plays host to Williamsburg Friday, Raiders beat Center Point Urbana 34-7 in their opener.
Clear Creek Amana won the freshman game 8-0 over M.P. Tony Cristoforo 62 yards rushing, Spencer White rushed for 44 yards and was 5-7 passing for 68 yards, Ben Canby caught 4 balls for 34 yards. Defensively Austin Smith and Tyler Ruby led the way.
MPHS JV team plays at W. Burlington-Notre Dame Monday.

The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team opened its 2011 season with a solid 3-1 win over Calumet College (Ind.) of St. Joseph Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers scored less than three minutes into the game and held the Crimson Wave scoreless for 82 minutes in the road win. IWC won its season opener on the heels of a 1-15-1 record last year, while Calumet lost its first game of the season.
Fanny Koloko-Green (Sr.-Ohlone, Calif.), Jillian Sulcer (Sr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) and Hannah McElroy (Fr.-Glen Carbon, Ill.) all scored goals for Wesleyan. Koloko-Green scored just 2:30 into the match on an assist from Brittney Moss (Sr.-Genoa, Ill.) to put IWC ahead. Sulcer added a second goal in the 15th minute on an assist from Savanna Blair (Fr.-Redlands, Calif.) to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead that would hold until late in the second half.
McElroy added an insurance tally in the 75th minute to make it 3-0, and the Tigers still had the shutout going until Patty Diaz scored unassisted late to get the Crimson Wave on the board.
IWC will attempt to move to 2-0 on the season when it hosts Monmouth (Ill.) College in another non-conference match on Thursday at 5 p.m. at East Lake Park.

The 2011-2012 MPHS Competition Cheerleading Squad opened their season at The Westdale Mall Spirit Competition in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, August 27th defeating 7 Iowa schools for a first place trophy in the High School Cheer Division. Members of the squad are: First row: Hailie Baccam, Katherine Hall, Claire Melzer, Shelby Gillis, Amy Buckert, Morgan Barton, Michaela Mathews, Jenny Miller, Andrea Glick, Chelsey Stark, Jayde Mumme, Sarah Robb, Courtney Mabeus, Marla Anderson, Hollie Mathews, MacKena Steenblock, Tasha Vancil, and Leslie Taylor. The MP Cheerleaders will be competing at several contests around the state in the next few months, with the Iowa State Cheerleading Championships being the grand finale on November 5th in Des Moines. The group is coached by Tracey Shull.

News from the Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec Department. Registration for Youth Flag Football is going on until august 31st, program is for boys and girls in grades 1-5.
Kindergarten flag football registration is open until September 6th. The four week program meets at East Lake Park on Tuesday evenings.
Panther cheerleading camp registration is open until September 2nd. This camp is for youth in grades K-5. Camp meets on Saturday mornings and will conclude with participants cheering at the MPHS football game October 14th.
