Area volleyball action last night saw #6 Mediapolis sweep Lone Tree, #3 Holy Trinity Catholic swept Danville the match had to be played in West Point because of a power outage in Ft. Madison. New London edged Central Lee 3-2, Wapello downed Highland 3-0. It took Winfield Mt. Union all five games to beat L&M 3-2, Pekin swept Columbus 3-0.
The Mt. Pleasant high School volleyball team was off last night and will not play till Tuesday when they host Fairfield.

The Winfield Mt. Union cross country meet was held Thursday night. Wapello won both the girls and boys divisions. Girls with 45 points and boys with 48. Ella Feldman of Lone Tree won the girls race and Bennett Moser of Wapello the boys.
The latest rankings of cross country teams and individuals shows the Pekin girls team is #1 in class 1A and Wapello is #14. Hanna Weber of Mt. Pleasant is ranked 30th in the 3A girls rankings. Cassie Sufflick of Danville/New London is ranked 9th in 2A.
The Ft. Madison boys team is ranked 14th in class 3A, Wapello is 6th in class 1A.
Zach May of Mt. Pleasant is ranked 18th in class 3A runners, Isaac Steffensmeier of Ft. Madison is 5th in that class. In class 2A Dillon Timmerman of Mediapolis is ranked 24th. Bennett Moser of Wapello is ranked 2nd in class 1A and his teammate Ben Polley is 15th.

The MPMS 8th grade volleyball team played James Madison in Burlington Thursday. In the “A” match J.M. won 2-1, “B” match J.M. won 2-0, “C” match ended in a tie as did the “D” match. Top performers were: Ellie Schliesman, Skye loving, Kelsey Wolf and Cheyenne West.

Mt. Pleasant travels to Pella to play district VII football tonight. The Little Dutch are 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the district. Their lone loss was the opening game of the year when they lost to Newton 41-14. Since then they have run the table in impressive fashion scoring 170 points and allowing just 30. Pella is entering a key three game stretch where they play Mt. Pleasant and Keokuk at home and then go to Fairfield. Pella likes to run the football and is led by 160 lb. senior running back Austin Fuller who has run for 422 yards in 48 carries and has scored two touchdowns. Sam Davis has scored 7 touchdowns and has picked up just under 300 yards.
M.P. is 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the district, and have had more success throwing the ball. Ross Heitmeier is coming off a 338 yard performance against Ft. Madison and has thrown for just under 900 yards in five games. Dalton Conrad has caught 18 balls for 336 yards and 4 touchdowns. Donnie Johnson has rushed for 392 yards on 84 carries and has six touchdowns.
Pella won over Mt. Pleasant last season 21-6.
KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live beginning at 7 p.m. with the pregame show, statewide high school football scoreboard is at 10 p.m. and the Bob Jensen post game show at 11 p.m.
The freshman teams of the two schools play at 5 p.m. tonight. The JV teams will play in Mt. Pleasant on Monday.

The Waco High School football program is celebrating their 50th anniversary during this weekends homecoming.
Head football coach Chad Edeker has put together a special event to celebrate the 50 years of Warrior football. Tonight there will be a tailgate event from 5-7 p.m. at the football field before the game with Danville. At 7 p.m. there will be a parade of past Warriors, former Waco players are invited to be there to join their teammates and be introduced.
Then on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. an Alumni flag football game will be played, with an alumni pep band and drill teams also participating.

IGHSAU has released the latest volleyball rankings. Mediapolis fell one spot to #6 in class 2A after losing in the championship match of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament last weekend to #3 ranked class 1A power Holy Trinity Catholic. Fairfield dropped to #15 from 14th last week in class 3A.
Iowa City West is #1 in class 4A, Dubuque Wahlert is #1 in 3A, Western Christian leads 2A and Tripoli 1A.

Major League Baseball now prepares for playoff action. American League matchups: Tonight Detroit plays at New York and Tampa Bay visits Texas.
National League matchups: Philadelphia will host St. Louis Saturday and Arizona plays in Milwaukee.
