Taylor Shull recovered from a knee strain in the first minute of the game to go onto score 25 points and lead the Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team to a 65-54 home win over Burlington. Kelsi Phipps added 19 points and Taryne Shull 15. MPHS is now 11-6 overall and will host #1 ranked class 4A power Iowa City West Tuesday night.
MPHS girl’s basketball team had to come from behind in the second half to defeat Ft. Madison in the Hound Dome Friday night 51-36, freshman Kelsi Phipps led the way with 18 points, Taylor Shull had 12 and Taryne Shull 11 points.
Mt. Pleasant won the freshman game 85-12 and the JV game 45-13 over the Bloodhounds.
Jordon Ashton hit for 25 points in the MPHS boys win Saturday against Burlington by a score of 54-42. Nick Lyon also got into double figures with 12 points. The #3 ranked Panthers play at West Branch Thursday in the second game of a girl boy double header.
MPHS boys clinched their 4th straight Southeast Conference title with a 72-37 win over Ft. Madison in Panther Gym Friday night. Logan Mulford had 6 three point field goals and had 20 points total to lead the Panthers. Blake Vandenberg and Nick Lyon each added 10.
The Panther freshman won over the Bloodhounds 41-26 and the MPJV won 48-39.
Burlington won the Southern Iowa Wrestling Classic hosted by Fairfield Saturday with 144.5 points, Mt. Pleasant was 7th with 110. Justin Dilks finished 2nd at 182 pounds for the highest Panther finish, Zach May finished 3rd at 132, as did Jacob Dilks at 195 and Colton Aplara at 220 pounds.
Mediapolis rolled to the Southeast Iowa Super Conference wrestling title with 225.5 points ahead of second place L&M with 147. The Bulldogs had 5 champions on the day.
Class 1A and 2A wrestling sectionals will begin this Saturday at noon.
Mt. Pleasant rolled to wins in bowling Saturday at the Iris Bowling Center over Fairfield. The Panther girls won 2,305 to 2,146. Tasha Glover rolled a 330 to lead MP. In the boys match the home team won 2,889 to 2,782 with Dustin Higginbotham rolling a 418 series.
Iowa Wesleyan traveled to Viterbo University in Wisconsin for Midwest Collegiate Conference basketball. The Tiger women won 64-58, Anna Jones scored 21 points and Ashley Kruse 16 to lead the Tigers to their 12 win of the season with 9 losses, they are 8-4 in the conference.
Viterbo won the mens game 71-56, Shakka Eke scored 18 points, Davis Warner scored 17.
Wesleyan women and men host Waldorf College Wednesday, KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will be broadcasting live.
LaStacy Freeman (So.-St. Louis, Mo.) and Keith Brown (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) helped to lead the Iowa Wesleyan College track & field teams at the University of Dubuque Spartan Invite on Saturday.
Freeman placed in the top five in three events for the Tigers. In the women’s 55-meter dash she placed third with a time of 7.62 seconds. She also placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 27.57 and rounded out her day with a fourth place finish in the 400 with a time of 1:09.28.
Brown finished in two events, finishing second in the men’s 55 hurdles with a time of 7.65 and placing third in the 200-meter dash at 22.74. His time in the hurdles was a facility record. Keith Brown set another new school record in the 55 hurdles (broke his own record from earlier this season) and his time in the 200 is second on our all-time list, behind only Rodger Bowers (22.64 in 1994).
The Tiger women finished the day sixth out of seven teams and the men finished eighth of nine.
Next Saturday the teams will be at the Cornell College Hilltop Invitational in Mount Vernon.
Indiana defeated the Iowa Hawkeye men in basketball in Bloomington 103-89.
The Iowa wrestlers ranked #6 in the country downed #3 ranked Minnesota 19-17.
Mid Prairie High School was scheduled to play varsity girls and boys basketball at Mt. Pleasant High School on February 6th, the girls teams are going to have to make up a weathered out game with Tipton that night so Mt. Pleasant will now be playing the 9th grade, JV, and Varsity boys’ basketball games at Mt. Pleasant Community High School with the 9th grade game starting at 4:30 p.m. There will be no games at Mt. Pleasant Community Middle School.
Activities Director at MPHS Bob Jensen has announced that a 9th grade girls’ basketball game vs. Central Lee on Monday, Jan. 30th at MPCHS starting at 6:30 p.m. has been added to the MPHS freshman girl’s schedule.
Games Galore for ages 3-5 years old! The Mt. Pleasant Rec Department wants to help young people stay active and beat the winter blues with four weeks of indoor fun and games! This program will offer a variety of your traditional favorite games as well as games that emphasize team work, problem solving, and communication skills.
