Iowa Wesleyan College athletes Anna Jones (Sr.-Cornell, Ill.) and Keith Brown (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) have both received Midwest Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Week honors, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Jones was named the MCC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Brown received the conference’s weekly honor for men’s indoor track athletes. Jones received the honor for the first time this season, while it is the first time in Brown’s career that he has won the award.
Jones is coming off another big week in which she averaged 24.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 4.7 steals per game. The 5-7 guard shot 52.9% from the field and 77.3% from the free throw line as the Tigers won two of three games.
Jones had a monster game last Monday in a 61-55 win over the AIB College of Business with 37 points, 15 rebounds and nine steals. Her 37 points set a new school single game record for scoring, surpassing the previous record of 36 points set by Stacey Scharer (1995-2000) on Feb. 7, 1998 against Marycrest International University and tied by Allison Falls (2002-06) on Feb. 1, 2006 against Grand View University. Her nine steals also set a career single game high and her 15 rebounds tied a career high.
Jones also had 15 points and 13 rebounds on Thursday in a 66-61 loss to a Grand View team ranked 10th in NAIA Division II. She then recorded 21 points and nine rebounds on Saturday, leading Iowa Wesleyan to a 64-58 win over Viterbo (Wis.) University.
Jones has won the conference’s weekly honor two of the past three weeks and now has won the award five times in her four-year career. Jones is averaging 19.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.9 steals per game for IWC, which is now 12-9 overall and 8-4 in the MCC. Jones leads the Tigers in all four categories and also tops the team in shooting percentage (47.7%). She also leads the MCC and ranks second nationally in steals per game.
Brown received MCC honors after finishing second in the 55-meter hurdles and third in the 200 at the University of Dubuque Spartan Invitational this past weekend. His time of 7.65 in the hurdles met the NAIA ‘A’ standard to automatically qualify him for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships March 1-3 in Geneva, Ohio.
Brown broke the school record he set in his first meet for the Tigers two weeks ago, and his time currently ranks second in the nation in the NAIA in the 60-meter hurdles, with his adjusted time of 8.18 projected out over 60 meters behind only the 7.97 of Cedrique Smith of Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University. He is one of just two runners nationally thus far to hit the ‘A’ standard in the event.
Brown also ran the 200 meters in 22.72 at Dubuque, and his time is second all-time on IWC’s performance list in the event, behind only the 22.64 run by Rodger Bowers in 1994.
The IWC women’s basketball team returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Waldorf College at 5:30 p.m. at Ruble Arena. The Tiger indoor track & field teams will return to competition Saturday at the Cornell College Hilltop Invitational in Mount Vernon.
