(DES MOINES) Today the Iowa Senate approved 8.5 million dollars in additional funding for the Department of Corrections. The money will address urgent needs at prisons and community-based corrections facilities across the state. At issue are staff shortages that could threaten public safety.

“The funding shortfall had created serious safety issues, both for prisoners and for correction officers,” said State Senator Gene Fraise of Fort Madison, “We had to address those issues.”

In Senator Fraise’s district, Senate File 2071 will provide additional resources $1,260,748 for the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison and $404,087 for the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility

“I told my colleagues the people who keep us safe every day needed help, and the Senate responded,” said Fraise. “I hope the House will also act quickly and the governor will sign this legislation so these problems can be resolved.”
