As of last week, Harmony High School’s football season was questionable… with low numbers turning out for the 2012 football team, students transferring out, and some players dropping off of the team – there was a high possibility that Harmony would not have football this year. Discussions began last Wednesday to find a solution for the players who wanted to play. On Friday morning, the Harmony School Board held an emergency meeting, and approved a sharing agreement with Central Lee – which was approved by Central Lee Monday night. The former rival teams – will now join forces in at least a two year sharing agreement. Harmony Superintendent and Athletic Director Dennis Phelps, and Central Lee Superintendent John Henriksen are pleased with the agreement, and just want ensure that the Harmony players who want to play football – have a place to play. So the Harmony Rockets JV and Varsity football teams will be missing from this year’s District 5 – Eight man schedule. The remaining 8 schools in the district are working together to work that schedule out. The Harmony players joining Central Lee will have to adjust from the eight man game, to the traditional 11 man football game, and are behind in the practice schedule, but have been welcomed to the Central Lee team, and will be playing football this year. Central Lee will remain in Class 2A, and will remain eligible for the playoffs, even with the sharing agreement. The agreement will be re-evaluated by Harmony in two years, and if numbers are up – Harmony will again field a team. As for Harmony’s coach Randy Clennan – he stated – he’ll “just have more free time than he’s used to this fall.”
The sharing agreement for Harmony is ONLY with football… Harmony’s Volleyball and Cross Country teams will play this fall.
