The Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance will once again provide area voters the opportunity to witness candidates for state and county offices debate vital issues at a pair of forums in October.
Candidates for Iowa Senate District 42 will convene from 11:30 a.m.—1 p.m. October 12 in the upstairs meeting room at the Mount Pleasant Library and Civic Center, 307 East Monroe Street. Democrat Rich Taylor of Mount Pleasant, Republican Larry Kruse of Houghton, and independent Michael Garmoe of Mount Pleasant have all agreed to participate. Dr. Dave Seibert, Professor of Business at Iowa Wesleyan College, will moderate.
Candidates for Henry County supervisor and sheriff will gather two weeks later, October 26, also from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library and civic center. Incumbent Republican Gary See, Republican Greg Moeller, and Democrat Kurt Garretson are vying for two seats on the Board of Supervisors. All plan to appear. Incumbent Republican Sheriff Allen Wittmer and independent challenger Rich McNamee also will participate in the debate. Mr. Dan McCabe, Vice President of the Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission, will moderate.
The public is encouraged to attend both events. Audience members may submit written questions for the candidates. Not all questions will be used.
The Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance candidate debates are an excellent venue for civic discussion, as candidates discover through the questions what issues are of primary importance to the public. The Chamber Alliance Government Affairs Committee elected to host the 2012 forums over the lunch hour in hopes of encouraging greater attendance. The Chamber Alliance will provide coffee, water and tea. Audience members are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch if desired.
