The Mt. Pleasant Panther football team still is in the running for a post season playoff spot after losing to previously winless Fairfield 33-10 on Evans Field Friday night, a win in that game would have locked up a trip to the post season. The Panthers can still get in, but the trip gets considerably tougher with three tough teams on the schedule to close out the regular season, starting next Friday night at Washington.
M.P. got on the board first against Fairfield with a 42 yard field goal from Liam Clancy with 9 minutes to play in the first half. The Trojans then answered with a touchdown pass from 20 yards out with 1:19 to play before half. Mt. Pleasant could have closed the gap before the half ended but a 24 yard field goal try was just wide of the mark.
In the second half the Trojans ground game kicked in and Mason Carnahan scored on runs of 54 yards, 63 yards and 72 yards. Carnahan had been held to just 11 yards rushing in the first half by the Panther defense but for the night he ended up with 3 td’s and 215 yards rushing on 11 carries.
The Panther ground game could only muster 21 positive yards, the passing game went for 280 yards.
The lone touchdown scored by M.P. was a 15 yard run by Josh Larson with 1:28 left to play in the game.
Fairfield won the Freshman game 36-12, Court Maddy and Darren Hunter scored touchdowns. Colton Mertens, Corry Fitten, Keegan Pullis and Cam Keomanivong led the tackling. The JV teams will play at Fairfield Monday.
