Halloween Safety Reminders

Halloween is just around the corner; in fact some communities are already having their celebrations.  With this in mind, the Red Cross has several tips for a happy and safe Halloween.  For costume safety: add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags and use face makeup instead of masks, which can cover eyes and make it hard for children to see.   They recommend planning a route ahead of time and if parents are not accompanying, make sure that parents know exactly where they are going.  Make sure that trick-or-treaters have a flashlight, walk only on sidewalks, and obey all traffic and pedestrian laws.  If you are giving out candy, a few reminders to take note of: make sure that your outdoor light is on, sweep leaves from sidewalks and steps and clear the area of obstacles and restrain pets.  Another suggestion the Red Cross has is to avoid a fire hazard instead of a candle in jack-o-lanterns use a flameless version or a glow stick.
