The MPHS JV football team traveled to Keokuk Monday night.

The latest Iowa High School football rankings has class 4A led by Ankeny, 3A is topped once again by Decorah, Williamsburg who hosts Mt. Pleasant Friday night is ranked 6th. Class 2A is led by Boyden Hull the Mediapolis Bulldogs are #2. Iowa City Regina is top ranked in class 1A, class “A” has Woodward Granger as it’s leader, Pekin is ranked 9th. Newell-Fonda is #1 in 8 man football.

The Iowa Track Coaches Association sponsored a statewide cross country meet for middle school runners in Saydel over the weekend. Mt. Pleasant’s 8th grade boys team won their race with 40 points, Dallas Center Grimes was second 46 and Xavier 3rd with 47. Logan Murray was the individuial champ winning by over 30 seconds ahead of second place and just 10 seconds off a meet record. Ryan Hutchison finished 3rd overall.
The ys were 3rd in their class with 60 points, Mt. Vernon won the title with 24 points and Glenwood was 2nd. Jonathan Ita had the best individual finsih.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Regional Volleyball Tournaments begin this week. Class 1A play begins tonight with Waco @ New London, Maharishi @ Winfield Mt. Union, Harmony @ Danville, Burlington-Notre Dame @ Holy Trinity Catholic in a match you’ll hear live on KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com. Other matches have Moravia @ Corydon Wayne, Seymour @ Moulton. Second round action will be Oct. 23rd, semi finals on Oct. 26th and Regional finals will be played at Mt. Pleasant on 10/31.
In Class 3A play begins 10/22, here are the area pairings: Mid Prairie @ Mediapolis a match you’ll hear live on KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com. Central Lee @ Columbus Community, Davis County @ Centerville, Chariton @ Albia. Winners play in the semi finals on 10/25 and those winners meet in the championship at Ottumwa on 10/30.
In class 4A the Mt. Pleasant Panthers drew a 1st round bye, they will play the winner of the Oct. 22nd Knoxville at Fairfield match on Oct. 25th at Fairfield. Washington, Clear Creek Amana and Cedar Rapids Xavier are in the bottom bracket. Semi Finals will be played 10/25 and Finals at Washington 10/30.

A race horse owned by Warren Garrels of rural Mt. Pleasant won a big race at Prairie Meadows Race Track in Altoona Saturday night. The quarter horse named Iris Cartelsbadnews won the Two Rivers Grade 3 race for horses 3 years old and older. The horse is trained by Amy Wessels of Northeast Iowa whose family has been in racing almost as long as Warren Garrels who is 77 and began racing back in the 1950’s. The next big race for Iris Cartelsbadnews is the Polk County Derby for Iowa bred horses that will be run at Prairie Meadows on October 26th with a purse of over $95,000.

In the National League Championship Series last night, San Francisco clobbered the Cardinals 7-1, that series is tied at one game each and game three will be tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in St. Louis.
The American League Championship Series is led by Detroit two games to none with game three being played tonight in Detroit at 7 p.m.
