Veterans Day is Sunday. The Avenue of Flags will observe the holiday at 2 pm at the Veterans Hall. WWII vet and VFW Chaplain retiree Bob Dameron will deliver the invocation. Members of the MPHS Choral department will sing the national anthem. Then all commanders of the VFW posts, American Legion posts and AMVETS posts throughout Henry County are invited to speak. The Henry County Honor Guard will then fire volleys and taps will be sounded. Finally names to be added to the Memorial will be acknowledged. Those names are Stanford Garrels, James Albright, Rex Norton, Francis Gillespie, Elizabeth Hookom, Joseph Kuntz, Harold Long and Robert Long. That brings the names listed on the memorial to 1206. A reminder: Mt. Pleasant City Hall will be closed Monday in honor of Veterans Day.
Lockridge also commemorate the day with a series of events. The Honor Guard will meet at the Community Center at 7:45 am and then march to the Cemetery. Once there, there will be a raising of the flag and singing of the national anthem. The rifle team will fire volleys followed by taps. Everyone will then gather at the Community Room for fellowship and refreshments. A program will follow with updates on the local memorial, an open reading, POW/MIA recognition, a moment of silence. There will then be Updates for the Veteran by guest speaker Ray Cambers the Jefferson County Veterans Affairs advocate. It will be a question and answer session for veterans and their families. Everyone is invited to participate and honor our veterans.
