The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Wever Fire and Rescue responded to a motor vehicle accident involving two motorcycles and a passenger vehicle on Saturday, November 10th, 2012 at 6:21 p.m. near Wever, IA. The investigation revealed that Lonnie D. Gillis, age 52, and Danny L. Smutzer, age 51, were riding motorcycles in the staggered position, travelling southbound on Highway 61. Gillis was the lead motorcyclist riding near the center line. Smutzer was the rear motorcyclist riding near the fog line.
A vehicle operated by Sandra Parrish, age 50, entered the highway from a private drive and pulled into the path of the motorcyclists. Gillis could not avoid a collision with the Parrish vehicle and struck the vehicle broadside, throwing Gillis from the motorcycle. Smutzer could not avoid a collision with the Gillis motorcycle, striking the motorcycle in the lane of traffic. Smutzer was thrown into the highway median. Lonnie D. Gillis, of 3275 175th St., Fort Madison, Iowa was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals by MedForce and later died from injuries sustained in the accident. He was not wearing a helmet. Danny L. Smutzer of 3707 Ave. L, Fort Madison, Iowa and Sandra Parrish of 405 Vica Lane, Fort Madison, were transported to Great River for treatment of their injuries.
