Ellis H. DeGrange, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.
The funeral service for Ellis DeGrange will be 1:30 PM on Friday, November 16 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend Herbert G. Shafer, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Friends are invited to join the family in a luncheon prior to the funeral beginning at 12 noon in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, with military graveside honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Thursday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM. There will be a public Masonic service at 7:30 PM conducted by the Mt. Pleasant Lodge #8 AF & AM.
Ellis Henry DeGrange was born May 6, 1926 in rural Primrose, Iowa. He was the son of George Henry and Bertha Albertine (Bogert) DeGrange. He attended elementary school in Primrose, and graduated from Donnellson High School in1944. On December 31, 1950 in Primrose, Ellis was united in marriage to Evelyn Darlene Mowrey. Mrs. DeGrange died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at their residence in Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. DeGrange farmed for a brief time following his high school graduation. He was called to serve his country during the Korean War. He was inducted into the United States Army on January 16, 1953 at Ft. Des Moines. Mr. DeGrange was assigned to the 6th Army Food Service School at Camp Roberts, California. He became a cook assigned to the 802 Quartermaster Service Company. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on December 15, 1954 at Fort Carson, Colorado.
Mr. DeGrange returned home and resumed his farming operation. In 1968, he accepted a position at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. He remained there for 10 years. He then took a position at the former Goodyear Hose Plant in Mount Pleasant, where he remained for 13 ½ years. He retired in 1992. For 20 years, he assisted Frank and Larry Van Syoc with their farming operations. He also assisted his grandson with his business, Jason’s Car Cleaning. In retirement, Ellis was a funeral associate with the Weir Funeral Home and later the Kimzey Funeral Home.
Ellis was member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant. He was a fifty-year member of the Masonic Order. He was raised and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Donnellson, and later transferred his membership to the Mt. Pleasant Lodge #8 AF & AM.
Those thankful for sharing in Ellis’ life include his 2 daughters and their husbands, Linda & Steve Heise and Deb & Terry Mabeus, all of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Rehwoldt of Mt. Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth DeGrange of Burlington; 4 grandchildren – Jason (Lisa) Goody, Elisha (Chad) McMullin, Ellee (Chris) Stewart and Whitney Mabeus, all of Mt. Pleasant; 6 great grandchildren – Joe, Grant & Gage Goody, Emma & _____________Stewart, and Ellaina McMullin.
His parents, wife and 2 brothers – George Wilmer DeGrange and Ellis’ twin, Elton DeGrange precede Ellis in death.
