Mt. Pleasant Police and the State Patrol were involved in a high speed chase last night that ended in the arrest of a Cedar Rapids man. At about 10 pm police received a report of a vehicle in the Swedesburg area that was driving onto the shoulder of Hwy 218. The vehicle was stopped near mile marker 42 but the driver, identified as Matthew Kirk, refused to get out of the vehicle. Instead he drove away leading officers on a high speed pursuit south on 218. The chase continued into Lee County and finally ended at the Missouri border where Missouri law enforcement officers took up the pursuit. Kirk was eventually stopped and charged with aggravated eluding, speeding, driving while revoked, driving under suspension and failure to provide insurance.
