Donald Lee Johnson, 66, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, December 15, 2012 at his residence.
A funeral service for Donald Johnson will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Herbert G. Shafer, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk with military honors conducted by the Iowa Funeral Honors Detail. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Wednesday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 PM Wednesday evening.
Don was born February 9, 1946 in Brighton, Iowa. He was the son of Charles Edward and Nita Faye (Hodson) Johnson. He graduated from Birmingham High School in 1964. On December 11, 1965 in Stockport, IA, John married Marcene Kay Morris. The couple later divorced. On February 11, 1988 in Mt. Pleasant, he married Cheryl Lee Holmes Watson. The couple later divorced.
On July 24, 1964, Don was inducted into the United States Army. He was assigned to the 331st Signal Company, 4th Battalion, United States Army. He was honorably discharged to the United States Army Reserves on July 23, 1967 at Ft. Polk, LA.
Don returned to the home area to work for the Amana Corporation, Amana, IA. He then worked on a farm near Stockport before taking a job at the IAAP in Middletown. For over 30 years, Don was employed as a boiler technician by the Borax Soap Company in Burlington, which later became the Dial Soap Company. After the plant closed, Don helped build and remained as the maintenance man for the Amerihost Motel in Mt. Pleasant. Don finished his working career at Nypro in Mt. Pleasant, retiring in 2004.
Don as a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2561, both of Mt. Pleasant. He was a former member and past president of the labor union at the Borax Soap Company. Don was an avid fisher and bowler. He loved to fish at Geode State Park and belongs to bowling leagues in both Burlington and Mt. Pleasant. Don enjoyed watching the New York Mets, the Iowa Hawkeyes, NASCAR and attending the Burlington Bees games.
Those thankful for sharing in Don’s life include 2 sons and their wives – Brion Johnson and his wife Carolin, currently stationed in Quatar from McDill AFB in Tampa, FL and Darrin and Mandy Johnson of Woodward, IA; 2 daughters – Kim Johnson of Moline, IL and Kami Conley and her husband Joshua of Dubuque, IA; 4 brothers and their wives – Richard & Diane Johnson of Fairfield, Raymond & Kare Johnson of Birmingham, IA, Dennis & Jody Johnson of Milwaukee, WI and Jeffery & Erin Jonson of Lockridge, IA; 2 sisters – Diana Kemp and Kathy Kuhlenbeck and her husband Greg, all of Mt. Pleasant; 10 grandchildren & 8 step grandchildren. At the time of his death, he was happily expected the birth of his 11th grandchild.
His parents precede him in death.
