Many eyes were on their television screens Saturday night to cheer on Miss Iowa during the Miss America Pageant. The Twitter and Facebook feeds were going wild as Mariah Cary, a Burlington native; hit the top five of the competition. She finished a strong fourth runner up at the competition. Cary attends Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids for Public Relations. The 20-year-old was diagnosed as a child with Tourette Syndrome and pledged to be an advocate for the disease. During the talent portion, she performed a tap number. Her one stumble may have been when she was asked a question regarding the legalization of marijuana. She told judges she knew people who used it for medical purposes and ended it by seeming to say that she approved marijuana for both medical and recreational use. Cary later clarified her stance saying that she was not in favor of legalized marijuana. Even though she didn’t earn the crown, she did win some nice prizes. Fourth runner-up isn’t too bad when it comes with $50,000 in scholarships. Southeast Iowa is no stranger to be represented in the pageant. Olivia Meyers of Sperry, another Miss Burlington, finished second runner-up in the 2009 competition.
