The MPHS girls basketball team put a scare in the 11th ranked Washington girls basketball team in Panther Gym Friday night but in the end came up short falling 60-57 in overtime. The Panthers opened up a ten point 15-5 lead after one quarter, led 25-18 at half, Demons pulled within 38-35 heading into the 4th quarter and then tied the game at the end of regulation 50-50, then pulled out the win in the extra 4 minute period.
The Panthers play host to Fairfield on Friday. Washington won the JV game 42-36.
Saturday the MPHS freshman girls beat Burlington 41-32, tonight MP hosts Washington.
Mt. Pleasant boy’s basketball team rolled to two big wins over the weekend. They defeated Central Lee 75-15 Saturday afternoon in Panther Gym. Cameron Frank scored 17 points and Faith Pope added 10.

The other game was a 65-38 win over Washington on the Demons new home court Friday night. Cameron Frank scored 16 points, Logan Mulford 13, Ryan Hanna and Faith Pope each scored 12.
Washington won the freshman game 36-33, Joe Hess scored 11 points. Panthers won the JV game 61-34, Zach Mulford hit for 22 points.
Saturday the Burlington Freshman boys beat MPHS “A” team 42-28, Tyler Batten led M.P. with 11 points. Burlington freshman boys 48 MPHS freshman “B” team 9, Ben Rauenbuehler scored 4 points.
Freshmen boys play at Mid Prairie tonight.
The MPHS wrestling team finished 7th at the Linn-Mar Duals Saturday. M.P. beat Dubuque Hempsted 57-17, M.P. beat Marion 57-18, Mt. Vernon defeated MPHS 44-18 and Linn-Mar won over the Panthers 48-22, Clinton downed MPHS 44-24. Colton Aplara at195 lbs. won all of his matches on the day.
Mediapolis won the Linn-Mar Duals winning 35-32 over the host school in the championship dual.
Burlington won the Ottumwa round robin tournament. Ft. Madison wrestlers won three of four duals at North Scott.
The Iowa Hawkeye wrestlers rolled over Purdue Sunday evening in Carver Hawkeye Arena by a score of 29-9, Iowa’s 26th straight win over the Boilermakers. Friday night the Hawkeyes beat Ohio State 22-9.
The MPHS bowling teams hosted L&M Saturday and swept the girls and boys matches. The M.P. girls won 2304 to 1853, Steph Ford rolled a 328.
The Panther boys won 2793 to 2544. Brock Palar was high roller for the home team with a 467 series.
Ashley Kruse (Sr.-Lakefield, Minn.) had a huge game for the Iowa Wesleyan College Tigers women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon. Kruse led the Tigers with a season-high 32 points as IWC got the win over Viterbo University, 62-55.
The win gives the Tigers a 5-12 record on the year now. They return to action on Wednesday, January 16 as they host AIB College of Business. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm and will be immediately followed by the men’s basketball game, KILJ-FM 105.5 will broadcast the double header live.
#2 ranked and undefeated Michigan rolled over the Iowa Hawkeye men in basketball Sunday afternoon in Michigan 95-67.
The Michigan women beat Iowa 68-64 in Iowa City.
Main Street Cinemas will show the BCS Championship Game Monday night starting at 6:30 pm. Notre Dame will play against Alabama. The broadcast is free to watch, concessions and beverages will be available for purchase.
In Sunday’s GoDaddy Bowl Arkansas St. beat Kent State 17-13.
NFL playoff action saw Baltimore beat Indianapolis 24-9, Seattle over Washington 24-14. Next Saturday Baltimore will play at Denver and Green Bay will be at San Francisco. Sunday Seattle will play at Atlanta and Houston at New England.
The following schedule changes have been made by Bob Jensen Activities Director at Mt. Pleasant Community High School:
1) The Varsity Girls & Boys Basketball games that were postponed on Dec. 20th with West Liberty have been rescheduled for February 5th at 6:00 p.m. at MPCHS
2) The 9th grade girls basketball games with Fairfield have been postponed from Friday, January 11th, to Monday January 28th at 7:00 p.m. at MPCHS
3) The JV/V girls & boys bowling meet vs.Ottumwa that was postponed on December 20th has been rescheduled for January 17th at 2:30 p.m. (same time as originally scheduled).
Due to lack of practice days prior to playing the first game of the second season, the Mt. Pleasant Middle School has rescheduled the January 10th seventh grade girl’s basketball games and 8th grade boys basketball games to February 4th. All times remain the same.
Activities Director at MPHS Bob Jensen has announced a change for the February 4th Mt. Pleasant vs Ottumwa boys basketball triple header. On Monday, February 4th, Mt. Pleasant’s 9th, JV, and Varsity boys’ basketball teams plays at Ottumwa. The 9th grade and JV games will be played at the same time in separate gyms at Evans Middle School at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity game will follow at the same site at 7:00 p.m.
