The IHSAA and IGHSAU have postponed the State Bowling Tournament that was to be held tomorrow, to Monday, March 11th, at 11:00 a.m. Mt. Pleasant High School bowler Brock Palar is representing the Panthers in the boy’s class 1A division. Brock is a student at Danville High School but bowls with the MPHS team.
The 17-5 Mt. Pleasant Panthers are scheduled to play the 14-8 Williamsburg Raiders in a 3A District championship basketball game tonight at 7 p.m in Fairfield. The Raiders are led by Matt Heitmann a 6’ 8” Junior who hits for 16 points a game from his post position shooting 74% from the field. Jordon McMenomy averages 10 points a game and is a very good free throw shooter hitting 75% from the line. Williamsburg beat Clear Creek Amana 79-56 and 51-42 during the regular season. Marion fell to them twice. They beat Washington 49-41 and Ft. Madison 61-50 in battles with common opponents of the Mt. Pleasant Panthers. M.P. is led by Faith Pope at 17 points a game, Ryan Hanna adds 12 and Cameron Frank scores 10 points per game.
KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game beginning at 7 p.m. The winner advances on to play in the substate championship Monday February 25th in Burlington or at Iowa City West if Keokuk is playing, against the winner of the Solon vs Keokuk game being played tonight in Washington.
Class 1A District Championship basketball will be played tonight if weather permits. The #1 ranked AND UNDEFEATED Danville Bears play Pekin at Muscatine in a 7 p.m. game, Sigourney is playing Moulton Udell at Albia, the winners of those games play Saturday night at Oskaloosa in the Substate Championship.
Two Iowa Wesleyan Tiger basketball players earned USCAA Division I All-American honors for their strong play this season. Kyle Warner (Sr.-Gresham, OR) represented the Tiger men as he earned USCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors. Ashley Kruse (Sr.-Lakefield, MN) represented the Tiger women, being named to the USCAA All-American Second Team.
Warner had a stellar season, leading the Tigers in scoring with 19.0 points per game. Warner also averaged 7.0 rebounds a game in his final season for the Tigers. He shot 49.2 percent from the field, and was an impressive 42.4 percent on three-point attempts for the season.
Kruse led the IWC women in her final season with the Tigers, averaging 15.2 points per game. Kruse also led the Tigers with 7.5 rebounds per game. She was aggressive on the offensive boards, pulling down 74 offensive rebounds this season. Playing in all 26 games, Kruse shot a strong 45.0 percent from the field.
The IWC men’s basketball team finished the season with a winning record, defeating Clarke University 80-76 on Senior Day at IWC to finish at 14-13 on the year.
The IWC women’s basketball team also picked up a win against Clarke University in the Tigers’ last game of the season. The Tigers defeated the Crusaders 76-63 to finish with a 9-17 record.
Southeastern Community College men’s basketball team went on the road to play at Mineral Area in Missouri last night with only 6 players available to play after suspensions from a brawl at their Saturday night double overtime loss at home against Indian Hills. The Blackhawks brought home a 79-77 win. Nick Lyon former Mt. Pleasant Panther scored 12 points.
SCC now plays in the post season tournament either Monday or Wednesday depending on the outcome of some weekend games involving conference teams.
The SCC women beat Marshalltown 64-56, the SCC ladies host #2 ranked Kirkwood of Cedar Rapids Saturday.
Iowa State men beat Baylor on the road last night 87-82.
5th ranked Burlington Notre Dame has captured a spot in the 2013 class 1A Girls State Tournament Field. Their first round game will be on Monday February 25th at 1:30 p.m. against 7th ranked Colo Nesco a team that is 23-2, KILJ-AM 1130 and kilj.com will carry the game live. Other qualifiers are: Villisca, Newell Fonda, Bellevue Marquette, Ar-We-Va, Earlham and Central Lyon.
Class 2A State Tournament qualifiers: Pella Christian, Western Christian, Aplington Parkersburg, Panorama, Iowa City Regina, Laton Bronson, Maquoketa Valley and IKM-Manning.
