The 17-5 Mt. Pleasant Panthers are scheduled to play the 14-8 Williamsburg Raiders in a 3A District championship basketball game tonight at 7 p.m in Fairfield, the game was postponed from last night.  The Raiders are led by Matt Heitmann a 6’ 8” Junior who hits for 16 points a game from his post position shooting 74% from the field.  Jordon McMenomy averages 10 points a game and is a very good free throw shooter hitting 75% from the line.  Williamsburg beat Clear Creek Amana 79-56 and 51-42 during the regular season. Marion fell to them twice.  They beat Washington 49-41 and Ft. Madison 61-50 in battles with common opponents of the Mt. Pleasant Panthers.  M.P. is led by Faith Pope at 17 points a game, Ryan Hanna adds 12 and Cameron Frank scores 10 points per game.

KILJ-FM 105.5 and will carry the game beginning at 7 p.m.  The winner advances on to play in the substate championship Monday February 25th in Burlington or at Iowa City West if Keokuk is playing, against the winner of the Solon vs Keokuk game being played tonight in Washington.

Class 1A District Championship basketball will be played tonight if weather permits.  The #1 ranked and undefeated Danville Bears play Pekin at Muscatine in a 7 p.m. game, Sigourney is playing Moulton Udell at Albia, the winners of those games play Saturday night at Oskaloosa in the Substate Championship.


The William Penn men’s basketball team opens the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament at home on tonight by hosting Grand View in a semifinal round game. Not only are the Statesmen the top seed but at 28-1 coach John Henry’s team is ranked #1 in the country in the latest NAIA division two poll.

Mt. Mercy hosts St. Ambrose tonight in the other MCC semi final game.


The Buena Vista men hope the home court is an advantage when they host the University of Dubuque on tonight in the semifinal round of the Iowa Conference tournament. B-V had a first round bye after winning a share of the regular season title.

Luther hosts Wartburg in the other semifinal. The winners meet Sunday for the championship.


Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) will present a $15,000 check to the Iowa Food Bank Association (IFBA) during the Iowa State-Texas Tech men’s basketball game at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, February 23.

The check presentation is part of the “Sack Hunger” program, a partnership between Cyclone Sports Properties, HyVee and FCSAmerica designed to fight hunger in Iowa. The check represents $1,000 for each of the fifteen (15) quarterback sacks by the Cyclones football team during the 2012 season.  Cyclone Sports Properties, the multimedia rights holder for Iowa State Athletics and a property of Learfield Sports, was integral in bringing together HyVee and FCSAmerica for the “Sack Hunger” collaboration.



UNI and Drake get ready for the 12th and final “Bracket Busters” this weekend. For more than a decade the event game teams from non-BCS conferences a chance to play on national television in an attempt to help improve their post-season stock. It is being discontinued after this season.

UNI will be at home on Saturday night to take on Denver. The Panthers have won six straight and are 17-11 overall. Drake will be at home on Saturday night against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing skid with an overtime victory against Bradley on Wednesday night.



5th ranked Burlington Notre Dame has captured a spot in the 2013 class 1A Girls State Tournament Field. Their first round game will be on Monday February 25th at 1:30 p.m. against 7th ranked Colo Nesco a team that is 23-2, KILJ-AM 1130 and will carry the game live.  Other qualifiers are:  Villisca, Newell Fonda, Bellevue Marquette, Ar-We-Va, Earlham and Central Lyon.

Class 2A State Tournament qualifiers:  Pella Christian, Western Christian, Aplington Parkersburg, Panorama, Iowa City Regina, Laton Bronson, Maquoketa Valley and IKM-Manning.
