The State Bowling tournament has been postponed till March the 11th in Des Moines.  Brock Palar of the Mt. Pleasant Panther bowling team will be competing.


One 4A substate was played last night, Sioux City North upset Sioux City East 68-60. Here are the 4A substate games that were postponed last night because of weather and will be played tonight.  CLASS 4A:

Mt. Pleasant’s first round opponent at next weeks state tournament Waverly-Shell Rock is going to the state tournament for the third consecutive time, while MPHS is going for the 4th straight year.

Coach Nate Steege’s team is on an impressive run. While appearing at state in 2011 and 2012, Waverly-Shell Rock has built a two-year overall mark of 49-3, this season the Go-Hawks are 20-4. That’s 69-7 through almost three full seasons. The Go Hawk roster has 5 seniors, 8 juniors and 2 sophomores.  They are led by 6’8” Northern Iowa recruit senior Klinton Carlson, who’s been dealing with ankle problems.  He averages 17 points a game, sophomore Jake Velky scores at 13.8 per game he’s a 42% 3 point field goal shooter and junior Dan Stensland hits for 10 points a game.

The four Go-Hawk loses have been to Cedar Rapids Xavier 49-46, a team MPHS lost to 60-48.  Waverly also lost to New Hampton, Waterloo East and Charles City, since then they have won 17 in a row.


Danville boys basketball team is going to state next week.  Here is a list of announcements concerning that trip.  Tickets for the Monday game will be sold at the school thru Thursday at $8 each.  Friday a community meal will be held at Danville High School from 5-7 p.m. to raise funds for the team to go to the state tournament.  A pep rally will follow in the H.S. Gym.  An official send off will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday.


Seven former players and coaches are going to Join the IHSAA Basketball Hall of fame, March 9

     Two coaches and five former players, each from different decades will be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

     The festivities will be at the halftime of the Class 4A State Championship game.

     Coaches joining the Hall are Dave Lee from Conrad, former BCLUW mentor and Marquette  Catholic, Bellevue coach Jim Squiers who is retiring this year.

     The Hall of Fame players are each former All-State honorees who appeared in the State Tournament.  They include Monsenior Wayne Ressler of Cascade St. Martin’s; Lonnie Porter from Waterloo East and now coaching at Regis University in Denver, CO; Dean Schnoes from Cherokee; Ed Vaske who played at NESCO, Zearing; and Casey Blake from Indianola.





Southeastern Community College men’s basketball team opens post season tournament play tonight hosting Marshalltown Community College. The SCC women play at Iowa Central in Ft. Dodge.

Purdue plays at Iowa in men’s Big Ten Basketball.

UNI men play at Southern Illinois.


Iowa at Nebraska football game 2013 has been approved by the Big Ten conference to be played on the day after Thanksgiving, the conference had set it for Saturday but Nebraska traditionally plays on the day after turkey day so they requested the change.


The Drake Relays is moving a number of it’s marquee events under the lights on Friday of the event.

A number of the top races and field events will be held on Friday night this year which Drake officials hope will draw some of the athletes that in the past have gone to the Penn Relays because of the daytime schedule.


C. Vivian Stringer former Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball coach won her 900th game last night, her Rutgers team defeated South Florida 68-56 to make her the 4th NCAA women’s basketball coach to reach the 900 win plateau.  



Danville will be the #1 seed in this year’s Class 1A tournament field and open up the tourney against 8th seeded Wapsie Valley  who has a record of 17-8.  They are led by 5’11” senior Mitch Boevers who averages 19.3 points per game and has hit 64 of 186 3 point field goal attempts on the year.

Danville has finished second the last two years dropping championship games to Storm Lake St. Mary’s in 2011, they fell to Boyden Hull last year.  This year Danville comes in ranked #1 and undefeated at 25-0.  Over the last 4 years Danville has won 101 games and lost just 4.
