Burlington, Iowa, March 28, 2013 – On Tuesday, May 7, Burlington Civic Music Association’s season will conclude with one of opera’s premier performers: world-renowned bass-baritone Simon Estes and his “Roots and Wings” concert series. He will be joined onstage by the Des Moines County Student Choir.
The performance is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., at Memorial Auditorium, Burlington, Iowa. The show is sponsored by the John H. Witte Jr. Foundation. Although Burlington Civic Music is a season-ticket subscription series, general admission tickets are available for this special performance.
Since winning a silver medal at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966, Estes has remained a familiar figure on operatic stage with a repertory that has topped 100 roles. A Centerville, Iowa native, he has sung at most of the world’s major opera houses and in front of presidents, popes and internationally renowned figures and celebrities.
The Des Moines County Student Choir is composed of nearly 200 students from five area high schools:
• Burlington Community High School
• Danville High School
• Mediapolis High School
• Notre Dame Schools
• West Burlington Community High School
Estes will sing from a variety of musical selections, including classics and Broadway musical theater. Vocal music teachers will direct their students in several numbers. Estes and the student choir will close the program with “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Estes’ performance in Burlington celebrates his Iowa “roots” and the “wings” he provides young artists through the Simon Estes Educational Foundation. He donates half his performance fee to the foundation, which in turn will give scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 to students in Des Moines County. Scholarship candidates are recommended by school counselors. Scholarship qualifications include a high grade-point average, good moral character, a purpose and financial need. Estes’ scholarship committee interviews each finalist.
The day after his performance, Estes will present a lecture for students about the importance of education and developing good character. The lecture will be held in Burlington High School’s gymnasium, and it is open to all high school students in Des Moines County. The lecture is sponsored by the Rand Memorial Lecture Fund.
General admission tickets for the performance are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
