William Totemeier has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty after admitting he shot two coonhounds on his property last week. Totemeier, who lives on Des Moines Henry Avenue turned himself in to the Des Moines County Sheriff’s office Friday. He is also accused of fourth degree criminal mischief for burning the dogs GPS collars. After initially denying it, Totemier said shot the dogs because they were on his property scaring his livestock. The dogs were killed when they chased and treed a raccoon on Totemier’s property during a controlled hunt organized by the United Kennel Club last weekend. Iowa law allows landowners and others to protect their domestic animals from dogs running at large and chasing, maiming or killing domestic animals. Authorities are investigating exactly what the dogs were doing at the time they were shot.
