Aletha M. Collett, 91, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of rural Fairfield, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service for Mrs. Collett will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 14 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. Pastor Jeffrey A. McPheron of the Trenton United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. Friends may call after 9 AM on Thursday at the funeral home. The family will be present to receive friends from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.

Mrs. Collett, the former Aletha Mae Allen, was born July 29, 1921 in Rose Hill, IA. She was the daughter of Harrison Hiatt and Ethel Gay (Burgess) Allen. She moved to Ottumwa as a young child and attended school there. On July 31, 1939 at her sister-in-law’s home in Des Moines, IA, Aletha was united in marriage to Floyd Thomas Collett. Mr. Collett died November 5, 1980 at his home in Fairfield.
Aletha attended nurses training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ottumwa. For 15 years, she worked as a Certified Nurses’ Aide at the Park View Nursing Home in Fairfield. She also tended to several of the “farm wife” chores on the family farm.
Mrs. Collett was a member of the Pleasant View Mennonite Church of Mt. Pleasant. She was active as a volunteer at the former Mt. Pleasant Senior Center and Congregate Meal Site. She would volunteer her time substituting for the Meal Site director. She served on the SE Iowa Area Agency on Aging. Aletha was participated in the activities of the local Democratic Party. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, bingo and reading novel series. She derived great pleasure in watching and feeding birds.
Those thankful for sharing in Aletha’s life include 2 sons and their wives, Harold and Diane Collett of Mt. Pleasant and H. Duane and Konnie Collett of St. Charles, MO; 2 daughters, Mrs. Ann Sourwine of Mt. Pleasant and Jean Marie Whaley and her husband Gary of Effingham, IL; a brother and his wife, Jim and Leann Harrison of Independence, IA; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
Her parents, husband, 2 brothers – Wayne & Robert Harrison, a sister in infancy, Mary Frances Allen, a son-in-law, Blinn Sourwine, a daughter-in-law, Mary Collett and a grandson, Aaron Sourwine, precede Aletha in death.
