The Iowa Wesleyan College Tigers softball team played Webster University @ Webster University on Saturday. The Tigers and Gorloks split the doubleheader. The Tigers took Game 1 (1-0) while the Gorloks won Game 2 (6-0). Sonja Holmes picked up the win for the Tigers in Game 1, going the distance and pitching 7 scoreless innings. Jillian Leutscher took the loss in Game 2 as she allowed 6 runs in two innings. The Tigers are now 7-7 on the year. Boxscores are attached for softball games.
The IWC baseball team hosted Clarke University on Saturday. The Tigers and Crusaders split their doubleheader. Clarke took Game 1 (10-3), while the Tigers won Game 2 (6-5). Both games went 9 innings. The Tigers’ baseball team is now 4-9 on the year.
It was a heartbreaker yesterday for Cyclone fans with Iowa State lost to Ohio State78-75 in Dayton, Ohio for the NCAA Tournament. Number two Ohio State was 28-7 on the season and was led by Aaron Craft. Iowa State was 23-12 on the season and was 10th seeded. Iowa State did have a good game, overcoming 13 point deficit rallying to almost win but the Buckeyes proved too tough. The Cyclones worked their specialty hitting many 3’s. Korie Lucious led Iowa State with 19 points, Will Clyburn added 17. The Buckeyes now go on to play six-seeded Arizona on Thursday in Los Angeles. Arizona defeated Harvard Saturday 51-74 to make it into the Sweet Sixteen.
And the Hawkeyes are continuing along the tournament trail in the NIT after defeating Stony Brook in the second round in Carver Hawkeye Arena on Friday. The Seawolves topped the nation with road wins at 13 and worked hard to keep the streak going with the Hawks ahead by just 4 points with 9 minutes left in the game. They made a late run to defeat Stony Brook 75-63. The Hawks are now 23 and 12 on the season. This is only the 8th time since 1980 that the Hawks have achieved that feat. Devin Marble had a game-high 28 points. The U of I team will now play Wednesday against Virginia at their home court.
And the Hawkeye women came from behind to win their first round tournament game to win against Miami in the NCAA Tournament at Carver- Hawkeye Arena. The final score was 69-53. The Hawks trailed Miami by one point but fell behind by 7 points before at the start of the second half before making a run and coming out on top. The Hawkeye’s defense helped win with 24 turnovers. The ninth seeded team now goes on to the second round where they play top seed Notre Dame Tuesday.
The Cyclone women are taking on their old foe Georgia tonight in their second round game. They defeated Gonzaga 72-60 Saturday night in Spokane, Washington. The Iowa State team is a fifth seed and facing the Lady Bulldogs, a number four seed as they battle for a sweet sixteen bid. Many will remember that these two met in 1999 with Georgia coming out on top 89-71. Both coaches are looking forward to the rematch.
Due to weather, the JV/V girls tennis meet at Fort Madison and the JV/V boys tennis meet scheduled in Mt. Pleasant against Fort Madison scheduled for Monday has been postponed to Friday, April 19th at 4:30 pm.
Due to the weather, the JV/V boys track meet scheduled for today, Monday 3/25/13 at West Burlington has been postponed to Saturday April 6, 2013. The JV/V girls track scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 3/26/13 at Iowa City High has also been postponed.
Also, weather has caused a change in the Test-N-Tune scheduled for today at 34 Raceway in West Burlington. It’s been moved to Wednesday with pit gates opening at 5 and practice sessions running from 6 to 9 pm.
