Burlington Notre Dame had their girls basketball season come to an end as the Nikes fell in the State class 1A semi final game to #1 ranked Central Lyon 76-53.  Notre Dame fell behind 17-0 early in the game and could just never recover.  The Nikes end the year 22-4 with a lot of good young players returning next year.  Central Lyon will advance to the championship game you will hear on KILJ-FM 105.5 and at 4 P.M. today against Newell Fonda.


Iowa City West beat Cedar Rapids Jefferson 56-27 in a class 4A substate game last night, the defending state champion Trojans will be joined at the state tournament by  Bettendorf, Sioux City North, Cedar Falls, Des Moines Roosevelt ,Dowling Catholic West Des Moines, Dubuque Senior, Urbandale.


Tickets for Mt. Pleasant’s first round game of the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament will be on sale at the activities office at Mt. Pleasant Community High School.  The tickets cost $8.00 each.  Two reasons to come out and buy your tickets at the high school are 1) convenience – you do not have to stand in line to buy your ticket at the arena and 2) our activities department gets 25 cents for each ticket we sell.  THIS HELPS DEFRAY OUR COSTS FOR LODGING AND MEALS FOR THE TEAM.

These tickets will be available on the following schedule:

Friday, Mar. 1st, 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, Mar. 2nd, at Shottenkirk Automotive, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Monday, Mar. 3rd, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Tue., Mar. 4th, 7:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., noon



Danville boys basketball team is going to state next week.  Here is a list of announcements concerning that trip.  Tickets for the Monday game will be sold at the school thru Thursday at $8 each.  Tonight a community meal will be held at Danville High School from 5-7 p.m. to raise funds for the team to go to the state tournament.  A pep rally will follow in the H.S. Gym.  An official send off will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday.


Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec has registration underway for several programs.  Kindergarten soccer teaches boys and girls the fundamentals.  Registration ends March 22 and the league will be held Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6 pm from April 9th through the 30th.  Preschool Soccer is for children at least three and runs April 9th through 30th Mondays from 5:15 to 6 pm or 6:15 to 7 pm.  Youth Soccer 1st through 6th grade have league play in April and May with the first practice held March 23rd.  7th and 8th grade soccer will also run in April and May with a first practice on March 23rd.  Registration ends March 8th.  For more information or to signup, stop by the office or call 385-1475.

Tourney History:  1976, 84, 97 (4), 2010 (4), 11 (3), 12 (1) [6 trips-7-7] Also won the 1917 and 1918 titles [6-0] before IHSAA

     took over the tournament.

Journey to the Tourney:  Defeated Clear Creek-Amana 57-25 and Williamsburg 47-26 in the District Tournament then stopped

   Solon 51-33 in the substate.

Notable: This is the fourth straight trip to the defending champions and they have rebuilt after graduating four starters.

Did You Know? Coach McKowen was an All-State baseball player at Washington High School. He coached his two sons Jon and Brooks, neither of whom had a losing season. Brooks graduated in 2003 as Iowa’s all-time leading prep scorer with 2,831 points.


Seven former players and coaches are going to Join the IHSAA Basketball Hall of fame, March 9

     Two coaches and five former players, each from different decades will be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

     The festivities will be at the halftime of the Class 4A State Championship game.

     Coaches joining the Hall are Dave Lee from Conrad, former BCLUW mentor and Marquette  Catholic, Bellevue coach Jim Squiers who is retiring this year.

     The Hall of Fame players are each former All-State honorees who appeared in the State Tournament.  They include Monsenior Wayne Ressler of Cascade St. Martin’s; Lonnie Porter from Waterloo East and now coaching at Regis University in Denver, CO; Dean Schnoes from Cherokee; Ed Vaske who played at NESCO, Zearing; and Casey Blake from Indianola.



The State Bowling tournament has been postponed till March the 11th in Des Moines.  Brock Palar of the Mt. Pleasant Panther bowling team will be competing.
