SPORTS MARCH 11, 2013

The Danville Bears finished as consolation champions and the Sportsmanship award winners at the 2013 Boys State Basketball Tournament after beating North Tama 80-56 in the third place game Friday morning.  Steven and Michael Soukup twin brothers ended their Danville careers with appropriate double-double performances.  Steven scored 24 points and had 17 rebounds, he also surpassed the 2,000 career point mark ending his high school  days with 2018 points, the 32nd player to do so and joins Jake Wenning  former Bear standout who had 2179 during his career.  Michael Soukup scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Steven Soukup was named to the all tournament team and finished as the second leading scorer in the tourney with 78 points and the top rebounder with 44.

The 1A championship was won by last years champ Boyden Hull 49-45 over Storm Lake St. Mary’s.

The Class 2A State Championship was won by 9th ranked Sheldon over #1 ranked West Fork 48-36.  The 2A consolation game was won by Carroll Kuemper 80-52 over MFL-Mar Mac. The 3A championship was won by Waverly Shell Rock 48-41 over Harlan.  MOC won the sportsmanship award.  Iowa City West repeated as the 4A champion winning 54-36 over Bettendorf, Cedar Falls won the sportsmanship award.

         
           
           
           
           
           
           
           
           
           
           
   
           
           
           
           

The Iowa Wesleyan College softball team completed their games at the Tucson Invitational Friday. The Tigers won the first game, defeating Howard Payne University (TX) 3-1.

In the second game against Howard Payne University, the Tigers fell 7-6.

The softball team finished 4-4 at the Tucson Invitational, their best record there ever. They’ll now make the trip back home and host their first home game of the season on Thursday, March 14 vs. Hannibal-LaGrange University. The game is set to start at 2:00pm.

 

The Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team fell to Lewis & Clarke College of Oregon  6-4 on Friday in the Tigers last game at the Tucson Invitational.

The Tigers will now head back to Iowa and will play at Clarke University on March 12 to take on the Crusaders in a double header.  The first game is set to start at 3:00pm in Dubuque, IA.

 

7th ranked Kirkwood Community College of Cedar Rapids beat Southeastern Community College in women’s  Region XI playoff action by a score of 63-45 Friday  night in Keokuk. 

 

The Nebraska women’s basketball team eliminated the Iowa Hawkeye women from the Big Ten Tournament with a 74-62 win Friday.

The Iowa men beat Nebraska Saturday in the regular season finale at Carver Hawkeye 74-60.

Iowa State played at West Virginia Saturday and won 83-74.

 

Creighton men defeated Drake in the MVC Tournament 65-53, Doug McDermott scored 20 points to lead the Blue Jays and became Creighton’s all time leading scorer.

 

Penn State won the Big Ten wrestling tournament again with 151 points, Minnesota was 2nd with 139, Iowa was third and had no champions they scored 133.5 points.

 

The State High School Bowling tournament has been postponed till March the 11th in Des Moines.  Brock Palar of the Mt. Pleasant Panther bowling team will be competing.
