SPORTS MARCH 15, 2013

The MPHS wrestling team has handed out their awards for the season just ended.  The five state tournament qualifiers received special recognition, Tyler Lanphier, Josh Larson, Jayton Phillips, Justin Dilks and Colton Aplara.  1st team all Southeast Conference honors went to Colton Mertens, Jayton Phillips, Justin Dilks and Colton Aplara.  Southeast Conference All Academic honors were given to Josh Larson, Alec Mathews, Dillyn Mumme and Emmett Wester.  Most valuable wrestler:  Colton Aplara, Jackson Kelly was the JV team MVW.  Most wins Emmett Wester (31), most falls Michael Alderson (21), most takedowns Justin Dilks (78), Panther Award Tyler Lanphier.

 

Iowa advanced to the second round of the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament with a 73-59 win over Northwester  last night.  Tonight the Hawks battle Michigan State for a chance to get to the semi finals.

Iowa State advanced to the next round in the Big 12 men’s basketball tournament with a come from behind 73-66 win over Oklahoma.  Tonight the Cyclones tangle with Kansas, maybe the third time will be a charm for ISU who has lost two close games to the Jayhawks during the regular season.

 

Drake University has fired their men’s head basketball coach.  Mark Phelps had led the Bulldog program for the past five years, his record was 77 wins and 86 loses. 

 

Former Burlington High School state champion and NCAA II champion wrestler Ryan Phillips has taken the head wrestling coaching position at Labette Community College in Parson, Kansas. Phillips has been serving as an assistant at Upper Iowa In Fayette where he won his collegiate championship.  Labette has won the NJCAA wrestling titles the last two years.

 

The NCAA Wrestling Championships will be held in Des Moines March 21st thru 23rd, Julian Feikert a Keokuk High School graduate who wrestles for Oklahoma State will be in the 141 pound weight class, he was named as an at large selection by the NCAA yesterday and will be one of 33 wrestlers at that weight class. Feikert finished 3rd in the Big 12 conference meet.

Former Columbus Community state champ Matt Mougin a redshirt junior at Northern Illinois will be in the 174 pound weight class he finished 5th in the Mid American Conference Tournament over the weekend.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have 9 wrestlers qualified for the championships and Iowa State has 6 wrestlers qualified.  Northern Iowa has 4 qualifiers.

 

 

 

34 Raceway, Burlington, Iowa will kick off the

2013 Racing Season with the Westland Mall/Midwest Performance and Power Car Show and Season Kick Off Party this weekend Saturday, March

16 and Sunday, March 17.

Cars for the 2013 season will fill the mall for race fans to get a sneak peak and to show off their all important sponsors during regular mall hours.

Champion Spark Plug’s $125,000 “Search for a Champion” contest top 15 finalist Donnie Steward of West Burlington will have a booth set up so folks can vote on-site for his chance at $50,000.

Racers will take to the track for a test and tune on Saturday, March

23 with pit gates opening at 12 noon and testing to run from 1 pm – 4 pm. A $15 pit pass will be required but grandstand admission is free and concessions will be open.

360 Sprint Invaders IMCA Modified Special on Saturday, March 30 where $1000 will go to the winner of the IMCA Modified feature.

April 6 will be the popular Slocum 50 IMCA Late Model Summer Series with $5000 going to the IMCA Late Model winner.

The MOWA 410 Outlaw Sprints will return to the 3/8 mile with a $3000 to win event on Saturday, April 13.

On Saturday, April 20 you won’t want to miss the Cornbelt/UMP late Model Special with ground shaking thunder as they race for the $4000 to win prize.

The regular points races will begin on Saturday, April 27.
