SPORTS MARCH 6, 2013

It was 36 minutes of very intense high school boy’s basketball as Mt. Pleasant and Waverly Shell Rock battled in the class 3A quarterfinals at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  The Go-Hawks defeated the Panthers 54-49 in overtime to advance onto the semi finals Thursday night at 8:15 against Davenport Assumption.  MPHS jumped out to a 14-11 lead after one quarter but then lost the lead and trailed 26-22 at halftime.  After falling behind by 10 points in the third quarter M.P. came back and took a 6 point lead late in the game but missed some free throws, had some turnovers and had post man Faith Pope foul out of the game and that opened the door for Waverly to tie the game at the end of regulation and then win it in overtime.

Faith Pope was the only double figure scorer for Mt. Pleasant with 21 points, Ryan Hanna added 9 and Cameron Frank 8.  That ends the season for the Panthers who were 19-6 on the year and have had an impressive 4 year run where they have won 92 games lost just 14 while finishing 4th in the state in 2010, 3rd in 2011 and champions in 2012.  Also a congratulations to all the Panther fans who were so supportive throughout the season.
