SPORTS MARCH 7, 2013

Mt. Pleasant high School senior Linzie Hood signed a letter of intent to attend Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo. To play volleyball and continue her education.  Linzie is the daughter of Jeff and Lorna Hood and not only was a standout volleyball player but also excels in soccer.

 

The Iowa Wesleyan College softball team picked up two big wins Wednesday to move to 3-3 on the year.

 The Tigers defeated DeSales University 2-1, scoring in the bottom of the 7th inning to get the win.

 The Tigers then defeated St. Mary’s University (MN) 3-2. IWC scored all three runs in the 5th inning and move to .500 on the season.

 The Tigers’ softball team now has today off before taking Howard Payne University (TX) on in a double header on tomorrow in the last day of the Tucson Invitational.

 

Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec has registration underway for several programs including Little Dunkers.  This instructional program is for 1st and 2nd grade boys and girls.  They will learn the basics through drills.  The program is instructed by MPHS Coach Rundquist.  The program runs March 11th through the 14th from 6 to 7 pm at Cottrell Gym.  Also, Youth Volleyball Camp is for children in 3rd through 6th grade where students will learn fundamentals.  The camp is taught by MPHS Coach Luci Wulfekuhle.  The camp runs from 5 to 6 pm from March 18th through the 22nd.  Registration ends on Friday.  For more information, call the office at 385-1475.

Kindergarten soccer teaches boys and girls the fundamentals.  Registration ends March 22 and the league will be held Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6 pm from April 9th through the 30th.  Preschool Soccer is for children at least three and runs April 9th through 30th Mondays from 5:15 to 6 pm or 6:15 to 7 pm.  Youth Soccer 1st through 6th grade have league play in April and May with the first practice held March 23rd.  7th and 8th grade soccer will also run in April and May with a first practice on March 23rd.  Registration ends March 8th.  For more information or to signup, stop by the office or call 385-1475.

 

 

The State High School Bowling tournament has been postponed till March the 11th in Des Moines.  Brock Palar of the Mt. Pleasant Panther bowling team will be competing.

The Danville Bears rolled over Wapsie Valley 78-46 in their first round game at the Class 1A State Basketball Tournament Monday.  Their next opponent today in the semi finals is Storm Lake St. Mary’s who whipped up on Riverside Oakland 73-51 in their first round win.  The Bears are led by the Soukup twins, Steven who averages 27 points a game and Michael who scores 20 ppg.  The Panthers counter with a dynamic duo of their own, Luke Lenhart a lightning quick guard scoring 25 points a game and postman Kennedy Drey  who averages 23 points a game.  The winner moves on to play in the 1A championship Friday night at 6  against the winner of the Boyden Hull vs Traer North Tama semi final.  The consolation game is Friday morning at 10 a.m.
