Danville boys basketball team will get to do something at the State Tournament today that they have never done before……play in the class 1A consolation game.  The #1 ranked Bears lost their semi final game against #2 ranked Storm Lake St. Mary’s 61-55, the win puts the Panthers in tonight’s championship game against defending state champion Boyden Hull who downed Traer North Tama 77-52 in the other semi final.

Danville was led in scoring as usual by Steven Soukup who hit for 35 points and had 16 rebounds, he now needs just 6 points in the consolation game to hit the 2,000 point plateau, he would be the 31st Iowa high school player to accomplish that feat.  Former Danville Bear Jake Wennig who led the Bears to two state titles in 2001 and 2002 is a member of that group with 2,179 points.  Also the Bears over the last four years have a record of 101 and 4, and have not lost a regular season game since 2010.  The Bears just couldn’t come up with the support help needed to get the win.  Michael Soukup scored 8 points and Connor Hoelzen added 7.  Storm Lake St. Mary’s was led by their outstanding guard Luke Lenhart who scored 31 points  with 13 of them at the free throw line.  Danville had a cold shooting day from the field shooting 30% from the field, were 4 of 25 from 3 points range.  They did well on free throws hitting 17 of 22.

Danville is 26-1 going into the consolation game at 10 a.m. this morning and will face #6 ranked North Tama who has a record of 26-2.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and will carry the game live.
