Beware of Jury Scam

Written by on April 3, 2013 in News

It has come to the attention of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office that our community is the target of a “jury scam”. Citizens are receiving phone calls in which they are told that they missed jury duty and are asked to send $200 to avoid jail.

This is a SCAM! Deputies are assigned to the courtroom to poll the jury when prospective jury members convene at the courthouse. The presiding Judge then instructs the deputies to locate absent jurors, determine what excuse they might have for their absence, and report to the Judge. The Judge is the only person to decide if someone would be held in Contempt of Court due to absence from jury duty.

DO NOT provide any personal information to anyone telephonically and DO NOT send any money to avoid jail.
