Council Says No to Zone Change

It was a unanimous no vote. Last night the Mt. Pleasant city council voted down a request for a zone change on West Clay Street. While it was not an easy decision, the council stood behind the city comprehensive plan. The council chambers were packed with people supporting Emilie DeWulf’s request for a zone change for her family’s property at 901 W. Clay. Mayor Steve Brimhall said the reasons for and against the change were equally compelling. The property is currently zoned R1 single family residential. DeWulf would like it zoned Agricultural Residential Reserve. Longtime special conditions allow her to keep two horses but don’t allow for expansion. For example she would like to add a horse or two, sheep and goats and chickens. DeWulf would also like to build a horse arena for riding lessons. She could ask for the change again in 12 months.
