April is National Safe Digging Month

(Des Moines) – April is National Safe Digging Month and the Iowa Utilities Board reminds all Iowans to always Call 811 before undertaking any excavation or home improvement projects. Calling 811 connects to Iowa One Call, which provides contractors, homeowners, and others who may be excavating, digging or trenching with a single toll-free number to call for locating and marking underground facilities (electric, gas, communications/television, water and sewer). The phone call and service is free.

Iowa law states that if you are excavating, including digging, you must contact Iowa One Call at least 48 hours in advance (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays) in order to minimize the risk of damaging any type of underground facilities. The phone call can help eliminate the risk of damage to utility lines, disruption of vital services, potential physical harm, or possible fines and repair costs. Iowa’s One Call Center is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Additional information is available from Common Ground Iowa, regional partner of the national Common Ground Alliance, an association dedicated to ensuring public safety, environmental protection, and integrity of services by promoting effective damage protection practices.
