Mary Agnes Kruse Chatham, 91, of Houghton, Iowa, passed away at 8:24 a.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at her home in Houghton, Iowa.
Born December 20, 1921 in West Point, Iowa the daughter of William and Christina (Pomberg) Steffensmeier. On April 26, 1949 she married Leon Kruse. He preceded her in death on January 29, 1963 due to an automobile accident. On February 14, 1976 she married Glen Chatham. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1998.
Survivors include her five sons John (Marcia) Kruse of Houghton, Iowa, Steven Kruse of West Point, Iowa, Darrell Kruse of Keosauqua, Iowa, Lee Kruse of Houghton, Iowa and Howard (Jane) Kruse of Chicago, Illinois, two daughters Marcia Lichirie of Atlanta, Georgia and Jane (Steve) Krogmeier of Dubuque, Iowa, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one sister Luella (Cecil) Menke of Carroll, Iowa, one brother LeRoy (Rosanna) Steffensmeier of Fort Madison, Iowa, one sister-in-law Martha Steffensmeier of West Point, Iowa, one brother-in-law Leonard Menke of Gardnerville, Nevada and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Leon and Glen, two sisters Rita Sporkman and Jane Menke and one brother Adrian Steffensmeier.
Mary was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa and the Saint Ann’s Circle Daughters of Isabella. She was employed by Pilot Grove Savings Bank for fifteen years prior to marrying Leon. After their marriage, she was a homemaker. After Leon’s death, she worked at the Houghton Grocery Store for a number of years. She then worked for eighteen years for the postal service until she retired. Mary enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Houghton, Iowa where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening. There will be a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa with Father Gary Beckman as Celebrant. Burial will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Houghton, Iowa.
