The Mt. Pleasant Panther boys soccer (12-3) team advanced in the Class 2A Soccer Substate last night at home by defeating Fairfield 2-1.  They now will advance onto the Championship match Saturday at Solon against the 6th ranked Spartans (13-2) who defeated Washington last night 7-0.  Bo Vitale scored both Panther goals and Michael Alderson had nine saves in goal.

Class 1A Substate soccer saw Holy Trinity Catholic defeated Columbus Community 1-0.  The Crusaders will now host the Substate Championship in West Point Saturday, they will battle West Liberty who defeated Central Lee 5-1 in the other semi final match. 


The 2013 CLASS 1A STATE GOLF QUALIFIERS will be playing at LAKE PANORAMA NATIONAL RESORT in PANORA Tee Time is 12:00pm on Friday; 8:00am on Saturday – weather permitting

Winfield-Mt. Union  will take their district champion team to the state meet led by Coach Dave Therme.   Players on the Wolves team are: 

Brody Heying ,Klayton Booth, Kolt Rossiter, Zach Davis, Jake Edwards, and Sam Jennings.

New London will advance to the state meet as district runnerup led by Coach Greg Lerdal.  Tiger players competing:  Tristan Kadel, Quincy Porter, Hagin Gillis, Kyler Meyer, Jaydon Flowers, Tyler Schneider.

Jake Edwards of WMU and Tristan Kadel of New London will be involved in medalist play also.

In Class 2A golf action…Notre Dame West Burlington’s Kacie Broeg and wapello’s Zac Howell each earned a berth in the state high school boys golf tournament.  The two tied for third in the district meet and will advance as individuals, playing May 24-25 at Spring Valley Course in Livermore.  Mt. Vernon won the district title followed by Durant. 


Saturday the Mt. Pleasant baseball team  goes to the Waterloo tournament to play two games, opening against Denver in the first round.


The 9th grade baseball double header scheduled for Saturday, May 25th, vs. Iowa City West High School, will be played at Mt. Pleasant, not Iowa City, starting at 9:00 a.m.


Mt. Pleasant High School is sending their girls golf team to state!  The Panthers finished 2nd in the class 4A Regional Tournament played at Oskaloosa Monday.  Cedar Rapids Xavier was champion shooting 346, M.P. shot a 387, 4 strokes ahead of Washington.  Brianne Holtkamp led the Panther scoring with a 94 Emily Cox 97, Courtney Mabeus 98, Elle Schliesman 98.  Haley Booton added a 102 and Whitney Barton 136.  The State Tournament will be played May 28th and 29th at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

New London girls golf team also qualified for state finishing 2nd in the Class 1A Regional at Wapsi Oaks Country Club in Calamus.  The Tigers shot 392 for 2nd, Valley High School shot a 371 to place first.  The Valley Tigers are coached by Robin Madole who grew up in Mt. Pleasant, this is the last year for that school to exist, they merge with North Fayette West Union next year.

Leading New London to state were:  Baylee Lindell 96, Emma Pry 97, Victoria Noel 99, Jorgie Krieger 100, Morgan Oliver 108 and Breanna Stevens 109.

The State meet for Class 1A is played at Marshalltown’s American Legiona Course May 28th and 29th.

Grace Edwards of Winfield Mt. Union advances onto the State Meet also in medalist play after s91 in the Regional to be 5th in medalist action.

Central Lee’s Alex Krehbiel was medalist at the Class 3A Regional golf tournament at Columbus Jct.  shooting an 85, Kensley Heater of Mediapolis was 4th and will advance to State May 28th and 29th at Ames along with Krehbiel.





Coming up this weekend will be 2 big nights of racing action at 34 Raceway in West Burl;ington. Saturday, May 25 will be  KILJ Radio Night. The W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints return this week along with the Coors Silver Bullet IMCA Modifieds, Weikert Iron and Metal Sport Mods, Pepsi Stock Cars and I Connect You-Louisa Communications 4 Cylinders.  Then come back Sunday night, May 26 when the Brockway Mechanical Sprint Invaders return to 34 Raceway. Also racing Sunday will be the I Connect You-Louisa Communcations 4 Cylinders, Mod Lites and Vintage cars.  Clear your calendar for Friday, June 7 when the World of Outlaw Sprints return to 34 Raceway as they take on the 3/8 mile banked oval.
