The Mt. Pleasant Panther softball team is scheduled to open up their 2013 season at home tonight against Ottumwa,  this will be the season opener for the Panthers but the Bulldogs have had some action already, they swept Ft. Madison last night 10-0 and 12-1.

 

 

The Mt. Pleasant Panther boys soccer (12-3) team has advanced to the Class 2A Soccer Substate.  They now will advance onto the Championship match Saturday at Solon against the 6th ranked Spartans (13-2).

Class 1A Substate Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders will now host the Substate Championship in West Point Saturday, they will battle West Liberty.

 

      Three classes of high school boys’ state golf tournament will be played this weekend. This is the 86th year the Iowa High School Athletic Association has sponsored a State Golf Tournament.

     Class 3A will be held at Ames Golf & Country Club, while Class 2A will be contested at Spring Valley Golf Club north of Livermore.  The Class 1A teams will play their tournament at Lake Panorama National Course.

     Friday tee-times are 12 noon with 8 a.m. tee times on Saturday, weather permitting.

Class 1A

Course: Lake Panorama National Course, par 72 Qualified teams: Boyer Valley, Dunlap; Dunkerton; Grundy Center; New London led by Coach Greg Lerdal.  Tiger players competing:  Tristan Kadel, Quincy Porter, Hagin Gillis, Kyler Meyer, Jaydon Flowers, Tyler Schneider.; Riverside, Oakland; Sibley-Ocheyedan; West Lyon, Inwood; and Winfield-Mount Union led by Coach Dave Therme.   Players on the Wolves team are: 

Brody Heying ,Klayton Booth, Kolt Rossiter, Zach Davis, Jake Edwards, and Sam Jennings..

Total competitors: 55

Defending champion Bishop Garrigan and Treynor runner-up from 2012 did not qualify, nor did any of the five eligible players from last year’s top 15 individuals. Only schools in the field with a state tournament title or runner-up are Grundy Center and West Lyon.  Grundy Center won titles in 2003 and 2005 and took second in 1996 and 2010 and West Lyon, a 1990 runner-up.

 

Saturday the Mt. Pleasant baseball team  goes to the Waterloo tournament to play two games, opening against Denver in the first round.

 

The 9th grade baseball double header scheduled for Saturday, May 25th, vs. Iowa City West High School, will be played at Mt. Pleasant, not Iowa City, starting at 9:00 a.m.

 

Coming up tonight at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson on Hy-Vee Night the fans of the Lee County Speedway’s drivers will have their chance to determine the Most Popular Driver for 2013 at the track.

The contest program will benefit both the fans and the drivers of the Lee County Speedway, as the fans can get a $2 off coupon for the adult grandstand price from there favorite driver. In turn the driver who has the most fans take advantage of the coupons this Friday, May 24th will be honored as the 2013 Most Popular Driver of the Lee County Speedway.

 

 

Mt. Pleasant High School is sending their girls golf team to state!  The Panthers finished 2nd in the class 4A Regional Tournament played at Oskaloosa Monday.  Cedar Rapids Xavier was champion shooting 346, M.P. shot a 387, 4 strokes ahead of Washington.  Brianne Holtkamp led the Panther scoring with a 94 Emily Cox 97, Courtney Mabeus 98, Elle Schliesman 98.  Haley Booton added a 102 and Whitney Barton 136.  The State Tournament will be played May 28th and 29th at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

New London girls golf team also qualified for state finishing 2nd in the Class 1A Regional at Wapsi Oaks Country Club in Calamus.  The Tigers shot 392 for 2nd, Valley High School shot a 371 to place first.  The Valley Tigers are coached by Robin Madole who grew up in Mt. Pleasant, this is the last year for that school to exist, they merge with North Fayette West Union next year.

Leading New London to state were:  Baylee Lindell 96, Emma Pry 97, Victoria Noel 99, Jorgie Krieger 100, Morgan Oliver 108 and Breanna Stevens 109.

The State meet for Class 1A is played at Marshalltown’s American Legiona Course May 28th and 29th.

Grace Edwards of Winfield Mt. Union advances onto the State Meet also in medalist play after s91 in the Regional to be 5th in medalist action.

Central Lee’s Alex Krehbiel was medalist at the Class 3A Regional golf tournament at Columbus Jct.  shooting an 85, Kensley Heater of Mediapolis was 4th and will advance to State May 28th and 29th at Ames along with Krehbiel.

 

 

 

 

Coming up this weekend will be 2 big nights of racing action at 34 Raceway in West Burl;ington. Saturday, May 25 will be  KILJ Radio Night. The W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints return this week along with the Coors Silver Bullet IMCA Modifieds, Weikert Iron and Metal Sport Mods, Pepsi Stock Cars and I Connect You-Louisa Communications 4 Cylinders.  Then come back Sunday night, May 26 when the Brockway Mechanical Sprint Invaders return to 34 Raceway. Also racing Sunday will be the I Connect You-Louisa Communcations 4 Cylinders, Mod Lites and Vintage cars.  Clear your calendar for Friday, June 7 when the World of Outlaw Sprints return to 34 Raceway as they take on the 3/8 mile banked oval.
