For the first time since 1995 the Mt. Pleasant panther boys high school soccer team will be appearing in the State Soccer Championships played this Thursday thru Saturday at the Cownie Soccer park in Des Moines. Mt. Pleasant qualified for state on a rainy cool Saturday afternoon beating Solon 1-0 on their home all weather pitch. Bo Vitale scored the goal with 3 minutes left in the 1st half and Michael Alderson kept turning away Spartan shots all through the second half as he recorded a shutout in goal and helped lead his teams defensive effort that got them to state. M.P. ranked 14th with a 13-3 record will play 6th ranked Storm Lake at 2:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon on field #7. The rest of the field will be Cedar Rapids Xavier, Dubuque Wahlert, Pella, Norwalk, Waverly Shellrock and ADM Adel.

Holy Trinity Catholic was denied a trip to the Class 1A Soccer Championships as they lost to West Liberty 2-1 in West Point Saturday. Joining West Liberty in the 1A field: Dyersville Beckman, Des Moines Christian, MOC-Floyd Valley, Iowa City Regina, Riverside Oakland.
The New London Tigers boys golf team finished as runnerup in the Class 1A State Golf meet played in Panora Friday and Saturday. Winfield Mt. Union boy’s golf team brought home the 4th place finish making a jump from fifth place after the first day. Greg Lerdal’s New London Tigers shot 347-359 to place 2nd with a 706 total, Sibley Ocheyden shot a 344-329-673 to finish 33 strokes ahead of the Tigers who trailed by just 3 strokes after Friday’s first round. Dave Thermes WMU Wolves shot 372-352-724.
Tristan Kadel of New London shot 168 to finish 3rd in medalist play, right behind him was teammate Hagin Gillis with a 168. WMU’s low score was turned in by Jake Edwards who shot 175 to be 10th in medalist play, teammate Brody Heying was 11th with a 179.
