Charges Dropped Against Man Who Shot Dogs

Charges of animal abuse have been dropped against William Totemeier, accused of killing two coonhounds last March. The dogs came onto his property near New London during a coon hunt and according to Totemeier scared his cattle and destroyed fences. The dogs chased a raccoon onto Totemeiers farm during a sanctioned controlled hunt sponsored by a Mediapolis club. It was discovered neither dog was wearing a rabies vaccination tag. One dog had never been vaccinated and the other one’s vaccination had expired. Iowa law says its unlawful to own a dog that hasn’t been vaccinated for rabies. However, Totemeier is still charged with fourth degree criminal mischief because he burned the GPS collars the dogs were wearing.
