Mary C. Holtkamp

Mary C. Holtkamp, 92, of The Kensington in Fort Madison, Iowa, formerly of Houghton, Iowa passed away at 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2013 at The Kensington.

Born May 11, 1921, in West Point, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Eleanor (Holtkamp) Groene. On July 20, 1942 she married Linus Henry Holtkamp at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. He preceded her in death on December 11, 2009.

Survivors include her two daughters Marilyn (Tom) Dingman of Lapeer, Michigan and Dianne (Victor) Wilson of Fort Madison, Iowa, one son Harold (Joan) Holtkamp of Salem, Iowa, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, four sisters Julia Peterschmidt of Sacramento, California, Eileen (Victor) Peitz of Houghton, Iowa, Rita Harmeyer of West Point, Iowa and Betty (Duane) Denning of Fort Madison, Iowa, sister-in-law Imelda Groene of West Point, Iowa, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Linus, one son Michael, one daughter Kathleen, one brother Jim Groene, one sister in infancy Rosemary.

Mary was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa, the Altar and Rosary Society of the Church. She was a past Regent of the St. Anne’s Circle Daughters of Isabella and past State Regent. She was a member and past officer of D.C.C.W. Mary was named Iowa State Mother of the Year in 1966. She served on the St. John’s Parish Council, Houghton Town Council and the Houghton Manor Board. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in West Point. Mary worked for Sheaffer Pen Company for three years as head of the rebate department. She was a licensed insurance agent for 25 years. She was an integral part of the farming operation with her husband. She did volunteer tutoring at Iowa Wesleyan College and Marquette Grade School. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing cards, poetry and shopping. Mary was an expert seamstress and especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Houghton, Iowa. The family will meet with friends from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 5:00 p.m.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa with Father Gary Beckman as Celebrant. Burial will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Houghton, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to St. John’s Catholic Church or the West Point Library.
